Five lessons to make you think about the way we treat people.

1 - First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady.

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one:

"What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

"Absolutely," said the professor. "In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say "hello."

I've never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

2. - Second Important Lesson - Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man's door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached...

It read: "Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband's bedside just before he passed away... God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others."

Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.

3 - Third Important Lesson - Always remember those who serve.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. "How much is an ice cream sundae?" he asked.

"Fifty cents," replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. "Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?" he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. "Thirty-five cents," she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins.

"I'll have the plain ice cream," he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn't have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 - Fourth Important Lesson. - The obstacle in Our Path.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 - Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When it Counts...

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness.

The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Will I start to die right away".

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her.

Ever Wonder?

1. Ever wonder about those people who spend $2.00 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards:  NAIVE

2. Isn't making a smoking section in a restaurant like making a peeing section in a swimming pool?

3. OK.... so if the Jacksonville Jaguars are known as the "Jags" and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are known as the "Bucs," what does that make the Tennessee Titans?

4.  If 4 out of 5 people SUFFER from diarrhea...does that mean that one enjoys it?

5.  There are three religious truths:
a. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
b. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian  faith.
c. Baptists do not recognize each other in the liquor store or  at  Hooters.

6.   If people from Poland are called Poles, why aren't people  from Holland called Holes?

7.   Do infants enjoy infancy as much as adults enjoy  adultery?

8.   If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?

9.   Why do croutons come in airtight packages? Aren't they  just stale bread to begin with?

10.  Why is a person who plays the piano called a pianist but a person who drives a racecar is not called a racist?

11. Why isn't the number 11 pronounced onety one?

12.  If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it  follow  that electricians can be delighted, musicians denoted, cowboys  deranged, models deposed, tree surgeons debarked, and dry cleaners depressed?

13.  If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed  UP?

14.  Do Lipton Tea employees take coffee breaks?

15.  What hair color do they put on the driver's licenses of  bald  men?

16.  I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older; then it dawned on me ....they're cramming for their final exam.

17 I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny  little spoons and forks, so I wondered what do Chinese mothers use? toothpicks?

18.  Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post  Office? What  are we supposed to do, write to them? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen can look for them while they deliver the mail?

19.  If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?

20.  You never really learn to swear until you learn to drive.

21.  Ever wonder what the speed of lightning would be if it didn't zigzag?

22.  If a cow laughed, would milk come out of her nose?

23.  Whatever happened to Preparations A through G?

Made It To Heaven!

A man appeared before St. Peter at the pearly gates.

"Have you ever done anything of particular merit?" St. Peter asked.

"Well, I can think of one thing," the man offered. "Once, on a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of high-testosterone bikers, who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him on the head, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring and threw it on the ground." I yelled, "Now, back off biker boy or you'll answer to me!"

St. Peter was impressed. "When did this happen?"

"Just a couple minutes ago."

A 2022 Genie Story

A Husband took his wife to play her first game of golf. Of course, the wife promptly hacked her first shot right through the window of the biggest house adjacent to the course.

The husband cringed, "I warned you to be careful! Now we'll have to go up there, find the owner, apologize and see how much your lousy drive is going to cost us."

So the couple walked up to the house and knocked on the door. A warm voice said, "Come on in." When they opened the door they saw the damage that was done: glass was all over the place, and a broken antique bottle was lying on its side near the pieces of window glass.

A man reclining on the couch asked, "Are you the people that broke my window?"

"Uh... yeah, sir. We're sure sorry about that," the husband replied.

"Oh, no apology is necessary. Actually I want to thank you. You see, I'm a genie, and I've been trapped in that bottle for a thousand years. Now that you've released me, I'm allowed to grant three wishes. I'll give you each one wish, but if you don't mind, I'll keep the last one for myself."

"Wow, that's great!" the husband said. He pondered a moment and blurted out, "I'd like a million dollars a year for the rest of my life."

"No problem," said the genie. "You've got it, it's the least I can do. And I'll guarantee you a long, healthy life!"

"And now you, young lady, what do you want?" the genie asked.

"I'd like to own a gorgeous home complete with servants in every country in the world," she said.

"Consider it done," the genie said. "And your homes will always be safe from fire, burglary and natural disasters!"

"And now," the couple asked in unison, "what's your wish, genie?"

Well, since I've been trapped in that bottle, and haven't been with a woman in more than a thousand years, my wish is to have sex with your wife."

The husband looked at his wife and said, "Gee, honey, you know we both now have a fortune, and all those houses. What do you think?"

She mulled it over for a few moments and said, "You know, you're right. Considering our good fortune, I guess I wouldn't mind, but what about you, honey?"

You know I love you sweetheart," said the husband. I'd do the same for you!"

So the genie and the woman went upstairs where they spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying each other.

The genie was insatiable. After about three hours of non-stop sex, the genie rolled over and looked directly into her eyes and asked, "How old are you and your husband?"

"Why, we're both 35," she responded breathlessly.

"No Kidding," he said."Thirty-five years old..... and both of you still believe in genies?"

The Top 15 Biblical Ways to Get a Wife

I think I’ve seen these before, but they are funny, and in a twisted-logic kind-of-way not untimely given the cartoon controversy and some of the things being said by inflammatory Christians about Muslims/Koran/Muhammad’s teachings.

The Top 15 Biblical Ways to Get a Wife

1. Find an attractive prisoner of war, bring her home, shave her head, trim her nails, and give her new clothes. Then she’s yours. - (Deuteronomy 21:11-13)

 2. Find a prostitute and marry her. - (Hosea 1:1-3)

3. Find a man with seven daughters, and impress him by watering his flock.- Moses (Exodus 2:16-21)

4. Purchase a piece of property, and get a woman as part of the deal. - Boaz (Ruth 4:5-10)

5. Go to a party and hide. When the women come out to dance, grab one and carry her off to be your wife. - Benjaminites (Judges 21:19-25)

6. Have God create a wife for you while you sleep. Note: this will cost you.-Adam (Genesis 2:19-24)

7. Agree to work seven years in exchange for a woman’s hand in marriage. Get tricked into marrying the wrong woman. Then work another seven years for the woman you wanted to marry in the first place. That’s right. Fourteen years of toil for a wife. - Jacob (Genesis 29:15-30)

8. Cut 200 foreskins off of your future father-in-law’s enemies and get his daughter for a wife -David (I Samuel 18:27)

9. Even if no one is out there, just wander around a bit and you’ll definitely find someone. (It’s all relative, of course.) - Cain (Genesis 4:16-17)

10. Become the emperor of a huge nation and hold a beauty contest. - Xerxes or Ahasuerus (Esther 2:3-4)

11. When you see someone you like, go home and tell your parents, “I have seen a … woman; now get her for me.” If your parents question your decision, simply say, “Get her for me. She’s the one for me.” - Samson (Judges 14:1-3)

12. Kill any husband and take HIS wife (Prepare to lose four sons, though).-David (2 Samuel 11)

13. Wait for your brother to die. Take his widow. (It’s not just a good idea; it’s the law.) - Onan and Boaz (Deuteronomy or Leviticus, example in Ruth)

14. Don’t be so picky. Make up for quality with quantity. - Solomon (1 Kings 11:1-3)

15. A wife?…NOT? - Paul (1 Corinthians 7:32-35)

True Story

A man was flying from Seattle to San Francisco.

Unexpectedly, the plane stopped in Sacramento along the way. The flight attendant explained that there would be a delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft, the plane would re-board in 50 minutes.

Everybody got off the plane except one gentleman who was blind. The man had noticed him as he walked by and could tell the gentleman was blind because his Seeing Eye dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of him throughout the entire flight. He could also tell he had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached him, and calling him by name, said, "Keith, we're in Sacramento for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?"

The blind man replied, "No thanks, but maybe my dog would like to stretch  his legs."

Picture this:

All the passengers in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog!

The pilot was even wearing sunglasses. People scattered. They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!

True story.... Have a great day and remember...

Ivana Trump

Ivana Trump, first wife of former President Donald Trump and the mother of his three oldest children – and who helped build his real estate empire - has died, Donald Trump said on Thursday. She was 73.

In a post on his social media platform Trump said, "I am very saddened to inform all of those that loved her, of which there are many, that Ivana Trump has passed away at her home in New York City."

Duck Hunting

A man went hunting one day in Alberta and bagged three ducks. He put them in the bed of his pickup truck and was about to drive home when he was confronted by a game warden who didn't like many hunters.

The game warden ordered the man to show his hunting license, and the man pulled out a valid Alberta hunting license.

The game warden looked at the license, then reached over and picked up one of the ducks, sniffed its butt, and said "This duck ain't from Alberta. This is a Saskatchewan duck. You got a Saskatchewan huntin' license, boy?"

The man reached into his wallet and produced a Saskatchewan hunting license.

The game warden looked at it, then reached over and grabbed the second duck, sniffed its butt, and said, "This ain't no Saskatchewan duck. This duck's from Manitoba. You got a Manitoba license?"

The man reached into his wallet and produced a Manitoba hunting license.

The warden then reached over and picked up the third duck, sniffed its butt, and said, "This ain't no Manitoba duck. This here duck's from British Columbia You got a British Columbia huntin' license?"

Again the man reached into his wallet and brought out a British Columbia hunting license.

The game warden was extremely frustrated at this point, and he yelled at the man.... "Just where the hell are you from?"...

The man turned around, bent over, dropped his pants, and said, "You tell me, you're the expert!

Angel on Highway 109

A drunk man in an Oldsmobile

They said had run the light

That caused the six-car pileup

On 109 that night.

When broken bodies lay about

"And blood was everywhere,"

"The sirens screamed out eulogies,"

For death was in the air.

"A mother, trapped inside her car,"

Was heard above the noise;

Her plaintive plea near split the air:

"Oh, God, please spare my boys!"

She fought to loose her pinned hands;

"She struggled to get free,"

But mangled metal held her fast

In grim captivity.

Her frightened eyes then focused

On where the back seat once had been,

But all she saw was broken glass and

Two children's seats crushed in.

Her twins were nowhere to be seen;

She did not hear them cry,

And then she prayed they'd been thrown free,

"Oh, God, don't let them die! "

Then firemen came and cut her loose,

But when they searched the back,

They found therein no little boys,

But the seat belts were intact.

They thought the woman had gone mad

And was traveling alone,

But when they turned to question her,

They discovered she was gone.

Policemen saw her running wild

And screaming above the noise

In beseeching supplication,

"Please help me find my boys!

"They're four years old and wear blue shirts;

Their jeans are blue to match."

One cop spoke up, "They're in my car,

And they don't have a scratch."

"They said their daddy put them there

And gave them each a cone,

Then told them both to wait for Mom

To come and take them home."

"I've searched the area high and low,

But I can't find their dad.

He must have fled the scene

I guess, and that is very bad."

The mother hugged the twins and said,

While wiping at a tear,

"He could not flee the scene, you see,

For he's been dead a year."

The cop just looked confused and asked,

"Now, how can that be true? "

The boys said, "Mommy, Daddy came

And left a kiss for you."

"He told us not to worry

And that you would be all right,

And then he put us in this car with

The pretty, flashing light.

We wanted him to stay with us,

Because we miss him so,

But Mommy, he just hugged us tight

And said he had to go."

"He said someday we'd understand

And told us not to fuss,

And he said to tell you, Mommy,

He's watching over us."

The mother knew without a doubt

That what they spoke was true,

For she recalled their dad's last words,

"I will watch over you."

The firemen's notes could not explain

The twisted, mangled car,

And how the three of them escaped

Without a single scar.

But on the cop's report was scribed,

In print so very fine,

"An angel walked the beat tonight on Highway 109."

What's In A Name?

The lineage is now revealed. Many people are at a loss for a response when someone says "You don't know Jack Schitt," but now you can handle this situation with confidence!

Jack is the only son of O. Schitt and Awe Schitt. O. Schitt, the fertilizer magnate, married Awe Schitt, the owner of Knee-deep N.Schitt, Inc.

In turn, Jack Schitt married Noe Schitt, and the deeply religious couple produced six children: Holie Schitt, Fulla Schitt, Giva Schitt, Bull Schitt and the twins, Deep Schitt and Dip Schitt.

Against her parents objections, Deep Schitt married Dump Schitt, a high school drop-out. After being married 15 years, Jack and Noe Schitt divorced. Noe Schitt later married Mr. Scherlock, and because her kids were living with them, she wanted to keep her previous name. She was then known as Noe Schitt-Sherlock.

Dip Schitt married Loada Schitt and they produced a nervous son, Chicken Schitt. Fulla Schitt and Giva Schitt were inseparable throughout childhood and subsequently married the Happens brothers in a dual ceremony. The wedding announcement in the newspapers announced the Schitt-Happens wedding. They created a bumper sticker and made millions. You've probably seen it...

The Schitt-Happens children were Dawg, Byrd and Hoarse. Bull Schitt, the prodigal son, left home to tour the world. He recently returned from Italy with his new bride Pisa Schitt.

So now when someone says, "You don't know Jack Schitt," you can correct them and inform them of your more than deep knowledge of the family tree.

Maybe you should rethink "Spit or Swallow"?

100 Stories of Ukrainian Resistance

The MFA of Ukraine has created a portrait of the Ukrainian resistance on Ukraine’s official website. Read more than 100 stories of heroes defending Ukrainian freedom.

100 stories of Ukrainian resistance

The platform about the war in Ukraine war.ukraine.ua provides official, verified information about the events during the full-scale invasion of Russia. An integral part of the platform was the section "Defenders of Freedom" https://war.ukraine.ua/heroes/. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine collected and published the brightest stories of Ukrainians defending their freedom on various war fronts.

The war against Russia became the people's war of Ukraine. Ukrainians stood up against Russia's full-scale aggression altogether, regardless of their profession, age, hobby, or residence. Ukrainians have already proved that we will stand for freedom, life, and our homeland to the last breath, to the last drop of blood.

The world has already heard stories about incredible Ukrainians.
Those who stop enemy tanks with their bare hands. Those who cover children with their chests. Those who tell the enemy to go to hell in the face of death.

My Dear 'OZ'ians,

I have decided to post some questions that were asked about The Wizard or about 'OZ' over the last year or so, I hope you enjoy this and get answers to your unasked questions.

Maybelle J writes: I sent an email to The Love Doctor and he responded with an answer I didn't like or agree with, can you talk to him if I send you an email?

The Wizard: I don't govern what or how The Love Doctor advises people. Just email him back and ask him to reconsider his advice. Or ask another person for a second opinion.

Jeffery T. writes: How many posts have you written?

The Wizard: As of today, I have made 26,285 posts on 'OZ'.

Darren E. writes: Do you ever repost blog posts? I swear I get a feeling of deja-vu sometimes.

The Wizard: Yes I do repost popular posts, but for the most part I only post them once.

Jill S. writes: I want to look at a post I read on your blog, but can't remember the date to see it again. Is there a secret to looking for previous posts?

The Wizard: Of course! On the left hand side of 'OZ', you will find a Search box. Just enter the topic or the content and it should show up in the main window.

Mary H. writes: How many people read 'OZ'?

The Wizard: It fluctuates, usually around 1400-1900 visitors/week, (sometimes over 4000!!).

Sarah H. writes: How long have you been posting on your blog?

The Wizard: I started posting around March of 2004.

Jim B. writes: How do you find the time to make so many posts on 'OZ'?

The Wizard: Takes very little time, about 2 hours a week to do 3 posts a day.

Brian writes: Have you ever been served a copyright violation or had to pay a fine for copyright?

The Wizard: Yes, once or twice and no, I have not been fined. If I am taken to task on copyright, I will immediately remove the offending picture or post. That has been good enough for them as I am not making any money from 'OZ' - The 'Other' Side of the Rainbow, like I have said in the past, it costs me money to produce my blog. Sometimes I get into trouble when people send me content via email with no sources. As far as my posting goes, I try to credit the original content producer or post just a part of an article with a link to the full one. Biggest issue is the use of pictures and photos, quite often I am not able to find the originator. Fingers crossed on that one.

Cam D. writes: I would like to post or link a blog post to put on facebook, is there a way to do this?

The Wizard: Yes. At the end of each post is a graphic to share the post with facebook, Blogger, Twitter, GMAIL and Pinterest. Just click on the icon of your choice. You may also click on the envelope icon under the post to email with your default email program.

Judy S. writes: What is your motivation and why do you do this blog?

The Wizard: I like the process and to have my slice of the web out there. I like the fact that what I do and the fact it interests other people to visit and read 'OZ'.  However, even if i get no visitors I would still likely post it anyways.

Greg D. writes: Are you planning on publishing 'OZ' forever?

The Wizard: Well, to tell you the truth, it all depends upon Google and their image hosting policies. Currently there is no limit in the number of pictures that can be hosted on Google's servers (they own Blogger). If they decide to charge for used storage, I may continue if it's priced favourably, remember, I don't make any money from 'OZ" and in fact it costs me money to pay to have the individual web pages hosted and stored, the cost of the othersideoz.com domain, etc. If however they just stop hosting images altogether, then I will have to do a hard reset on the blog and start posting from scratch. It would take too long to replace and restore images that would be gone after something like that. I am still working on the 'fixing' and reuploading images I hosted on Photobucket that were lost, so.. we will have to see.

So I hope this answers any questions you may have about 'OZ' - The 'Other' Side of the Rainbow. If you have any more questions, email me, make a comment or click on the "Contribute" image.

My Dear 'OZ'ians,

I have looked into left justified text on 'OZ', but it just doesn't look good enough to satisfy my OCD, so effective today I am switching back to fully justified format for the text on 'OZ'. I hope you are OK with that, dear reader. Hopefully this won't decrease the visits to my blog. I did give it the old college try though... it just is not meant to be for me. Happy reading!

Of course if you really believe that the left aligned is better than fully justified, make a comment about it. I am curious to know! (Mary?)

R.I.P. L.Q. Jones (1927 - 2022)

L.Q. Jones

Character actor L.Q. Jones, who featured in a string of film and TV westerns often in the role of the 'heavy,' has died of natural causes at the age of 94.

His grandson Erte deGarces broke the news to Variety, saying Jones was surrounded by family at his Hollywood Hills home when he passed on.

Jones' career spanned over half a century and included a series of films by the famed director Sam Peckinpah, who specialized in gritty, unflinching westerns.
