The story of a woman, immortalized by the Mexican photographer Enrique Metinides in March 1966, (sorry - no picture), tells a sad story that denounces how much misery and indifference dwells in the human soul.
The woman's two-year-old daughter died after being hit by a truck. Her baby had been transported to a hospital and when her mother asked for her body, they told her that without a coffin, they couldn't let her go. Besides, she had to think about it.
The poor woman's financial situation was truly dire, so she began asking people in the area for help on the streets.
It took her two uninterrupted days but in the end she managed to raise the funds to purchase a small white coffin which she alone and on foot took to the hospital in which her little one was placed.
Still alone, she brought her beloved daughter back to her town, San Juan de Aragon, which was about 12 km away.
