R.I.P. Sass Jordan (1960 - 2026)

Sass Jordan

R.I.P.Sass Jordan, the Montreal-raised rock singer whose career spanned nearly four decades, has died at 65.

Sass Jordan was one of Canada's most distinctive rock singers—a powerhouse vocalist whose music blended hard rock, blues, soul and a little bit of Southern-rock grit. She was born Sarah Jordan in Birmingham, England, and moved with her family to Montreal when she was three. She grew up there and began performing professionally as a teenager.

Her big breakthrough came with her 1988 debut album Tell Somebody. The album established her as a major Canadian rock vocalist and earned her the 1989 Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year.

Then came Racine in 1992, probably the album most closely associated with her career. It produced songs including "Make You a Believer" and "You Don't Have to Remind Me." Her success was not limited to Canada: Billboard named her Top Female Rock Artist of 1992.

One fascinating part of her career was the musicians she worked with. She toured or performed with major acts including Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Van Halen, Joe Cocker, Alice Cooper and Cheap Trick. She also performed with Joe Cocker on the Bodyguard soundtrack project.

Taylor Hawkins connection

There's a particularly interesting piece of rock history involving Sass Jordan and Taylor Hawkins, who later became the drummer for Foo Fighters.

Hawkins played drums for Jordan during her Rats era in the early 1990s, before his later work with Alanis Morissette and Foo Fighters. In other words, Sass Jordan's band was one of the important early chapters in the career of a musician who would eventually become one of the best-known rock drummers of his generation.

Canadian Idol

A completely different generation of Canadians probably knows Jordan best from Canadian Idol. She became a judge when the show began in 2003 and remained on the panel for all six seasons. Her blunt, energetic personality made her one of the show's memorable personalities.

She also had a theatrical side, playing Janis Joplin in Love, Janis, as well as appearing in television and stage productions.

Her later music

Jordan increasingly moved toward the blues as her career progressed. Her 2020 album Rebel Moon Blues reached No. 5 on the Billboard Blues Albums chart, and she followed it with Bitches Blues in 2022.

Sadly, there is also some very recent news: Sass Jordan died on October 2, 2026. She was 63 according to her official biography and several reports; some news reports have given conflicting birth-year information, so the exact age has been reported inconsistently. Her family announced her death, and no cause of death had been publicly disclosed in the reports I found.

Her legacy is particularly interesting because she wasn't simply a "Canadian Idol judge." Long before television, she was a serious rock musician who earned her reputation on stages and records, with a gritty voice that could move comfortably between hard rock, blues and soul. 🎸🇨🇦
