For Immediate Release
London, UK -- January 30, 2013-- This Valentine's Day, The Irrepressibles release their sophomore album; Nude. It combines dark electronica with organic orchestration and is - in their words - an attempt to explain "the rich complexity of life." A raw, elements-inspired work with a focus on the passing of time and memory, NUDE is expansive and atmospheric. It features powerful melodies and arrangements that fuse together European electronica and orchestration with Lynch-like American iconography.
The Irrepressibles is the creative work of artist composer and vocalist Jamie McDermott. His voice is one of beauty, defiance, emotion, masculinity and gay sexuality. His provocative Farinelli-meets-Elvis style has been readily compared to David Bowie, Jeff Buckley and even Grace Jones. From the front cover of Boyz magazine to features in Attitude, Gay Times, Italian Vogue, Vogue L'uomo and Dazed & Confused, McDermott has become somewhat of a nouveau international gay music icon.
The Irrepressibles began in 2002 as an art performance project. They gained a reputation for their now legendary art-pop before BEING signed. Their performance “spectacles” such as the Human Music Box, Mirror Mirror and Air were commissioned by prestigious venues such as the V&A Museum, Holland Festival and South-Bank Centre. With a mantra to “make something that portrays the real originality, drama and intensity of life,” The Irrepressibles first incarnation was described by McDermott as a “performance orchestra,” that he choreographed and led.
In 2010 a short film showcasing “In This Shirt,” off their debut Mirror Mirror, became an online phenomenon. Their stunning visuals and homoerotic imagery proved startling original and a pertinent introduction to one of the UK’s most innovative bands. Inspiring remixes by Royksopp, Zero 7 and Hercules & Love Affair as well as multiple covers by artists from all over the globe, “In This Shirt,” has reached near seminal status for the band. A host of other tracks from Mirror Mirror have provided the soundtrack to dance, film and television. Over the past two years The Irrepressibles have earned verbal support from many famous fans including Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes to Hollywood), Bill Drummond (KLF), Boy George, George Michael, David McAlmont, Amanda Palmer, Dermot O'Leary, Lauren Lauvern, Faithless, and Royksopp.
Their sonic influences range from Phil Spector, doo-wop masters The Flamingos, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Neil Young, and European electronica. NUDE marks another distinct chapter in the ever shapeshifting story of The Irrepressibles. The Irrepressibles showcased songs from Nude at sold out shows in London, Vienna, and Lisbon. Further dates are being lined up to coordinate with the album release in the rest of Europe, USA and Canada on Valentine's Day.
