For the next U.S. presidential election in 2028, there is an important wrinkle: Donald Trump is constitutionally barred from being elected president again under the 22nd Amendment, because he was elected in 2016 and again in 2024. A U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee document in 2026 also states that the amendment prevents a person from being elected president for a third term.
Trump has nevertheless continued to hint at a 2028 run, including wearing “Trump 2028” merchandise and making comments about another term. More recently, however, he has also talked about leaving office in January 2029 and life after his presidency.
So there isn't a meaningful way to say today that Trump will or won't win the next election. The bigger immediate question is whether he will attempt to challenge the constitutional two-term limit. As of September 2026, the law remains the major obstacle, and the 2028 Republican field is already beginning to develop around other figures such as Vice-President JD Vance.
