Pando is one of the most fascinating organisms on Earth—and it looks like an ordinary forest of trembling aspen trees. 🌳
The name Pando is Latin for “I spread”, and that's remarkably appropriate.
Pando is a gigantic clonal colony of quaking aspens (Populus tremuloides) located in Fishlake National Forest in Utah. What makes it extraordinary is that the thousands of trees you see above ground are genetically considered one organism.
Each visible tree, or stem, is connected underground to a massive network of roots. Instead of reproducing primarily from seeds, Pando has expanded by sending up new shoots from that shared root system.
Scientists estimate that Pando contains tens of thousands of individual stems spread across roughly 43 hectares (106 acres).
Even more astonishing is its age.
Although the individual trunks generally live for only around 100–150 years, the root system may have existed for thousands of years. Estimates vary considerably, but Pando is commonly described as potentially being 80,000 years old or more. Because there is no way to simply count its annual growth rings back through the entire organism, its precise age remains uncertain.

And there's another amazing feature. In autumn, Pando's leaves turn brilliant yellow, meaning that an enormous area of genetically identical trees can effectively change colour together. 🍂
How does Pando reproduce?
Pando primarily uses vegetative reproduction.
A mature root system sends up a new shoot. That shoot develops into a trunk and eventually becomes another aspen stem. Genetically, however, it is essentially a copy of the original.
So when you look at 10,000 aspen trunks, you're not necessarily looking at 10,000 genetically distinct trees.
You're looking at something more like 10,000 branches of one enormous underground organism.
Is Pando the largest organism on Earth?
This depends on how you define "largest."
Pando is often described as one of the largest organisms by mass and area, and it is unquestionably among the world's largest known clonal organisms.
There are other contenders depending on the measurement used. For example, enormous fungal colonies can occupy much larger areas.
Pando's claim to fame is particularly impressive because it combines huge size, enormous mass, genetic unity and extreme longevity.
Is Pando dying?
This is where the story becomes rather sad.
Pando has been experiencing problems with browsing by deer and other herbivores, particularly when young shoots emerge. If new stems are continually eaten before they can mature, the older stems die without being replaced.
Researchers have also been studying the effects of drought, climate change, insects, disease and changes in fire patterns.
In other words, Pando's biggest problem isn't necessarily that its old trees die.
That's normal.
The problem is that the next generation may not be surviving in sufficient numbers to replace them.
Scientists and forest managers have been experimenting with protective fencing and other measures to encourage regeneration.
There's something wonderfully strange about Pando: a single organism may have survived for thousands of years, yet its greatest threat could be its inability to produce enough young stems today.
It's essentially an ancient giant that looks like a forest. 🌳
