🧠 1. Brain temperature regulation
One leading theory is that yawning helps cool the brain. Opening the jaw widely increases blood flow around the head, and the deep inhalation may help bring cooler air into the body. A cooler brain may work more efficiently, which could explain why we yawn when tired or waking up.
😴 2. Switching between states
Yawning often happens when your body is changing states:
- waking up
- getting sleepy
- becoming bored
- relaxing after stress
It may act like a "reset button" that helps shift your brain from one level of alertness to another.

For a long time, people believed yawning happened because we needed more oxygen or had too much carbon dioxide. Research has largely shown this is not the main reason, because changing oxygen and carbon dioxide levels does not reliably stop yawning.
👥 4. Why is yawning contagious?
Seeing someone yawn, hearing about yawning, or even reading the word "yawn" can trigger one. Contagious yawning is linked to parts of the brain involved in:
- empathy
- social awareness
- imitation
It is common in humans and some other social animals, including dogs and chimpanzees. Interestingly, very young children and some people with certain neurological conditions are less likely to experience contagious yawning, suggesting it involves brain development and social processing.
🦷 5. Why does a yawn feel good?
Yawning stretches muscles in the face, jaw, and neck, while also causing a brief full-body stretch response. This may relieve tension and make you feel more awake or relaxed.
The average person yawns about 5–10 times per day, though tiredness, boredom, stress, and sleep patterns can greatly change that number.
