Order 66 is a pivotal event in the Star Wars saga, specifically depicted in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). It refers to a secret command issued by Chancellor Palpatine—who is secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious—to the clone troopers of the Galactic Republic.
The order instructs all clone soldiers to "execute Order 66," which is described as the command to eliminate the Jedi, branding them as traitors to the Republic. Because the clones were genetically programmed with obedience implants (known as inhibitor chips), they immediately complied without question. This leads to the near-total extermination of the Jedi Order, as clone units turn on their Jedi generals across the galaxy.
Order 66 marks the tragic fall of the Jedi and the rise of the Galactic Empire. It allows Palpatine to consolidate power, transform the Republic into the Empire, and crown himself Emperor. The few survivors—like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda—go into hiding, paving the way for the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, where Luke Skywalker eventually restores hope to the galaxy.
