Above is the fob and key for my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. Pressing the silver button on top left causes the key to pop out of the fob.
So the other day the door open button on my key and fob broke. I went to my Chevrolet dinner and had them price out a new key and fob. I was shocked when they told me that it was $168 for the fob with a blank key, plus $10 to cut the key!
I even programmed it myself with a secret procedure, simply start car with old key, turn it off, then put the new key in and start the car. If that didn't work, I would have had to book a service, which would have added about an additional $50 to the bill!
After taxes the bill for one key/fob was $198! 200 bucks. Unacceptable!
Here is some information about the key/fob:
A key fob, also known as a remote keyless entry (RKE) device or a keyless entry system, is a small electronic device that provides access and control to a vehicle, typically by remotely unlocking or locking the doors and, in some cases, starting the engine. Key fobs have become a standard feature in modern vehicles, offering convenience and security to the vehicle owner.
Key fobs are relatively expensive for several reasons:
Technology and Features: Key fobs are equipped with advanced technology, including radio frequency (RF) communication, microprocessors, and encryption systems. They offer a range of features beyond just unlocking and locking, such as remote start, panic alarms, trunk release, and even vehicle locator services. The cost of developing and implementing this technology contributes to the overall expense.
Integration and Compatibility: Key fobs need to be seamlessly integrated into the vehicle's electronic system, ensuring compatibility and security. This involves extensive engineering and testing to ensure the fob functions reliably with the vehicle's systems.
Security Measures: Key fobs employ encryption and other security measures to prevent unauthorized access to the vehicle. This added layer of security increases the cost of manufacturing.
Customization and Design: Key fobs are designed to match the specific brand, model, and aesthetic of the vehicle. The design process, branding, and customization add to the production costs.
Durability and Quality: Key fobs are constructed to withstand everyday wear and tear, ensuring longevity and reliability. The materials used, manufacturing processes, and quality control contribute to the overall cost.
Economies of Scale: While the cost of manufacturing key fobs might be relatively high, the overall cost to the consumer can be influenced by economies of scale. Mass production can help reduce the per-unit cost, but this cost reduction might not be fully passed on to the consumer.
Market Demand and Pricing Strategies: Demand for key fobs and their importance in modern vehicles allows manufacturers and dealerships to set prices at levels they believe the market will bear. Consumers often perceive the convenience and added security provided by key fobs as worth the cost.
It's important to note that the cost of key fobs can vary based on the brand, model of the vehicle, and the specific features included in the key fob. Additionally, replacement key fobs can be more expensive due to programming and dealership fees.
