Titanic as built (top), Titanic with three smokestacks (bottom)
The fourth smokestack provided a sense of balance and elegance to the Britannic-class liners. The first three smokestacks were needed to vent the ships’ boilers, but the ship would look far better with four smokestacks. The fourth was added for aesthetic reasons and provided ventilation for kitchens and certain other indoor spaces.
It wasn’t useless, but it wasn’t belching smoke and the same could be achieved with a smaller structure. The ship looked a lot nicer with four smokestacks however, which is why the fourth was also installed.
