Locked in!

Drawing a perfect circle without a compass

You’re locked in a room with only a pencil and paper. You will only be released if you can draw a perfect circle. What’s your plan?

Hold the pencil in your hand by wrapping four fingers around the shaft then extending your thumb toward the tip of the pencil. Kind of like holding a ping-pong paddle with your thumb extended up toward the centre of the paddle. (This is sometimes called a handshake grip)

Now place the second joint of your index finger in the centre of the paper while tipping your hand forward so that the pencil tip lightly touches the paper.

Next, while holding some pressure down on your finger, rotate the paper so that it pivots around the joint.

With little (or no) practice, you’ll be able to create a circle that’s as accurate as if you’d used a compass.
