The Avenue Community Centre for Gender & Sexual Diversity was incorporated in 1991 as Gay & Lesbian Health Services, a non-profit agency in Saskatoon working to address health and social issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and queer (LGBT2Q) community.
The Avenue Community Centre today welcomes and provides services to all people however they choose to define themselves in terms of sexual and gender identity. Firm in our understanding that heterosexism and homo/bi/transphobia have an impact on the health and well-being of all in our society, we work to improve acceptance of gender and sexual diversity. We are committed to the belief that health, defined as a state of complete physical, emotional, mental, existential and social wellness and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, is a fundamental human right and that the attainment of the highest level of health for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, and queer individuals requires action by all levels of society. Our work includes, but is not restricted to: education, support services, and improved access to health services.
Based on our understanding of the key determinants of health, we endeavour, in our services, to address the whole being and the environment in which the individual lives. We believe that our ongoing dialogue with the community provides the context and the knowledge which drive our programming.
The Centre provides a supportive place for people in our community regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, family and marital status, ability, gender, sexual orientation, age or income and social status.
