Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip vs. 30 Rock
In 2006, The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin announced his hotly anticipated next project: Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, an hour-long drama about the writing staff of a Saturday Night Live–like variety show. Meanwhile, SNL actress and writer Tina Fey was producing 30 Rock, a sitcom about the writing staff of a Saturday Night Live–like variety show. TV insiders predicted NBC would only pick one of the two shows, and that it would likely be the one from the producer of The West Wing. NBC picked up both, but Studio 60 struggled to find an audience and was canceled after just one season. NBC stuck behind 30 Rock, a critical darling that won three Emmy Awards for Best Comedy Series.
