Law & Order (1990–2010)
TV cop show writer Dick Wolf wanted to create a gritty, “ripped from the headlines” New York crime drama that gave equal focus to the detectives and the prosecutors. “In 1988,” he told TV Guide, “you couldn’t give away hour-long shows in reruns; you could only sell half-hour shows. So the original thinking was to try to make an hour-long show that could be split in half and sold as two half-hour shows.” He quickly came up with a concept: Law & Order. One half of the show would focus on police detectives tracking down a criminal; the other would show the criminal being prosecuted. Fox and CBS both turned it down. NBC picked it up … for 20 seasons and five spin-offs.
