Make every hour Earth Hour!
Thanks for turning out your lights for Earth Hour and sending a strong message to our government that we need to take action on climate change. Now please consider making changes in your everyday life by joining The Good Life.
WWF-Canada’s new interactive website, The Good Life, guides you with actions you can take to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions created through your daily activities. As with Earth Hour, these actions multiplied across the country will send a resounding message to our government that Canadians are ready for change.
Your first action – wash your clothes in cold water!
You can help fight climate change simply by changing the dial on your washing machine to wash your clothes in cold water. It'll get them just as clean, and will save a lot of energy and carbon emissions.
So far, 3,640 people have committed to washing their clothes in cold water in The Good Life. Help us to get 10,000 people signed up to take this action. We’ll send the results to the federal government as an indicator that Canadians are willing to make changes in their lifestyles to help fight climate change.
Why wash in cold water?
Almost 90 per cent of the energy used to wash clothes goes into heating the water. You can save as much as $100 a year by changing to cold wash and rinse, and about130 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions. If every household in Canada switched to cold in their washing machines, about 1.5 billion kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions would be saved. That is the equivalent to taking 250,000 cars off the road for one year!
What can you do?
• Adjust the settings on your washing machine to wash and rinse your clothes in cold water.
• Sign up at The Good Life and make your action count.
• Remember to always save on water by running only full loads in your machine.

I have also decided to stop bathing....thereby saving thousands of greenhouse gas kilos! Of course, this has also meant less socializing, but saving the planet is worth it. It has some excellent side effects...I always get a seat on the bus to myself, and the crowd in the shopping mall parts like the red sea parted for Moses! And easy to make deals! I tell ya! Just sidle up close to the salesman, and he practically gives it away!
Its kind of nice to walk into the room and have my fellow workers all stop talking, and look at me, clearly with envy at my green attitude.
