'Son Of A Preacher Man' Gets Reimagined As Heartbreaking Gay Romance

Son of a Preacher Man - Tom Goss
So many people are hurt in the name of love. Here's to another way.

The Ides of March

Caesar: The ides of March are come.
Soothsayer: Aye, Caesar, but not gone.

—Julius Caesar, Act III, Scene 1

Thanks to the Bard, the bloody events of 44 B.C. forever linked March 15—also called the Ides of March—with fulfilled prophecies of doom.

"That line of the soothsayer, 'Beware the ides of March,' is a pithy line and people remember it, even if they don't know why," said Georgianna Ziegler, head of reference at Washington, D.C.'s Folger Shakespeare Library.

Until that day Julius Caesar ruled Rome. The traditional Republican government had been supplanted by a temporary dictatorship, one that the famous leader very much wished to make permanent.

But Caesar's quest for power spawned a conspiracy to have him killed, and on March 15 a group of prominent Romans brought him to an untimely end in the Senate House.

Offset Calendars

Aside from its historical connection, the concept of the ides would have resonated with English citizens in 1599, the year Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar was probably performed, Ziegler said.

"This whole business of the Ides of March and timekeeping in the play would have had a strong impact on audiences," she said.

"They were really struck by the differences between their Julian calendar [a revision of the Roman calendar created by Caesar] and the Gregorian calendar kept in Catholic countries on the continent."

Because the two calendars featured years of slightly different lengths, they had diverged significantly and were several days apart.

In Roman times the Ides of March was mostly notable as a deadline for settling debts. That calendar featured ides on the 15th in March, May, July, and October or on the 13th in the other months. The word's Latin roots mean "divide," and the date sought to split the month, originally at the rise of the full moon.

But because calendar months and the lunar cycle are slightly out of sync, this connection was soon lost.

Heroes or Murderers?

The ides of March took on special significance after Caesar's assassination—but observance of the anniversary at the time varied among Roman citizens.

"How they felt depended on their political position," said Philip Freeman, a classicist at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and the author of Julius Caesar.
"Some were thrilled that Caesar had died, and some were horrified," he said.
The debate about Caesar's fate has extended through the ages and was taken up by some major literary figures. In Dante's Inferno, for example, Caesar is in Limbo, a relatively pleasant place in hell reserved for virtuous non-Christians.

"But Brutus [one of the leaders of the assassination] is down in the very center of hell with Judas, being munched on by Satan—it's about as bad as you can get," Freeman said.

The Folger library's Ziegler thinks the Bard had a more balanced view. 'Beware the ides of March '
"I think Shakespeare shows both of them as being humans with their own weaknesses and strong points," she said.

No matter whether they were heroes or murderers, the real-life assassins were subjected to less than pleasant outcomes.

"Within a couple of years Brutus and [fellow assassin] Cassius were dead," Freeman noted.

"They were not able to bring back the Republic, and really what they did was usher in more of a permanent dictatorship under the future Roman emperors—the opposite of what they intended."

Giggles, Guffaws and Groaners

Shall We Gather At the River
A preacher was completing a temperance sermon. With great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

With even greater emphasis, he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."

And then, finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river." He sat down.

The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a pleasant smile, "For our closing song, let us sing Hymn #365: 'Shall We Gather At the River.'"

Careful with that Opening Joke
Recently a large seminar was held for ministers in training. Among the guests were many well-known motivational speakers.

One of these speakers boldly approached the pulpit and, gathering the entire crowd’s attention, said, “The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman that wasn’t my wife!” The crowd was shocked! He followed up by saying, “And that woman was my mother!” The crowd burst into laughter and he gave his speech, which went over well.

About a week later one of the ministers who had attended the seminar decided to use that joke in his sermon. As he shyly approached the pulpit one sunny Sunday, he tried to rehearse the joke in his head. It seemed a bit foggy to him this morning.

Getting to the microphone he said loudly, “The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of another woman that was not my wife!” His congregation sat shocked. After standing there for almost 10 seconds trying to recall the second half of the joke, the pastor finally blurted out, “…and I can’t remember who she was!”

Father Duffy then asked, "Was it Mrs. Murphy?"

"No, Father."

"Was it Mrs. O'Malley?"

"No, Father."

"Was it Mrs. O'Brian?"

"No, Father. I just cannot tell you who it was."

Father Duffy tells Eric to go out and think about it and then come back when ready to confess who it was. Eric leaves the church and runs into his friend Jim. Jim asks, "Did you tell him you had the affair?"

"Yes. He wanted to know who it was, but I wouldn't tell him."

"What did he say? Did he give you absolution?"

"Oh no, but he did give me three new possibilities........"

Snotty Receptionist Messes with the Wrong Old Man
An older gentleman had an appointment to see the urologist who shared an office with several other doctors. The waiting room was filled with patients. As he approached the receptionist desk he noticed that the receptionist was a large unfriendly woman who more resembled a Sumo wrestler. He gave her his name. In a very loud voice, the receptionist said, "YES, I HAVE YOUR NAME HERE; YOU WANT TO SEE THE DOCTOR ABOUT IMPOTENCE, RIGHT?"

All the patients in the waiting room snapped their heads around to look at the very embarrassed man. He recovered quickly, and in an equally loud voice replied, "NO, I'VE COME TO INQUIRE ABOUT A SEX CHANGE OPERATION, BUT I DON'T WANT THE SAME DOCTOR THAT DID YOURS."

Midlife Crisis Avoided
After 25 years of marrriage, I took a look at my wife one day and said, "Honey, 25 years ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a hot 25-year-old sexy chick. Now, we have a nice house, nice car, big bed and plasma screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 50 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things."

My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 25 year old sexy chick and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, and sleeping on a sofa bed.

Aren't older women great? They really know to how solve your mid-life crisis.

Lawyers are Clever
An old penny pincher had no friends. Just before he died he asked his doctor, lawyer, and pastor to gather around him at bedside.

“I have always heard that you can’t take it with you. But I want to disprove that theory,” he said. “I have $90,000 under my mattress, and when I die, just before they throw the dirt on me at my burial, I want you each to toss in an envelope with $30,000 within.”

The three attended the funeral and each threw his envelope in the grave. On the way back from the cemetery, the pastor said, “I must confess. I needed $10,000 for my new church, so I only threw in $20,000.”

The doctor then said, “I must confess too. I needed $20,000 for a new hospital I was opening up, so I only threw in $10,000.”

The lawyer looked at them both and shook his head. He then said, “Gentlemen, I’m surprised, shocked, and ashamed of you. I don’t see how you could dare to go against that man’s final wish. I mean, I threw in my personal check for the full amount.”

She said I wasn't funny, but she couldn't have been right, because everyone else laughed. My parents told me to always tell the truth. I did. Fried chicken is my favorite animal. I told my dad what happened, and he said my teacher was probably a member of PETA. He said they love animals very much. I do, too. Especially chicken, pork and beef.

Anyway, my teacher sent me to the principal's office. I told him what happened, and he laughed, too. Then he told me not to do it again.

The next day in class, my teacher asked me what my favorite live animal was. I told her it was chicken. She asked me why, so I told her it was because you could make them into fried chicken. She sent me back to the principal's office. He laughed, and told me not to do it again.

I don't understand. My parents taught me to be honest, but my teacher doesn't like it when I am. Today, my teacher asked me to tell her what famous person I admired most.

I told her, "Colonel Sanders."

Nimoy's COPD Doctor Discusses Star's Final Wish

Principal photography has started on COPD: Highly Illogical: A Special Tribute to Leonard Nimoy and we now have more footage available to share with StarTrek.com readers. The following clips feature Dr. John Belperio, who was Leonard's personal physician/pulmonologist at Ronald Reagan/UCLA Medical Center in L.A. Dr. Belperio treated Leonard during the last few months of his life and they formed a very close relationship during this period. It started in November 2014, by which time Leonard's health had been declining for the past six months, and Leonard met with Dr. Belperi based on the strong reputation of UCLA Medical Center and Dr. Belperio for treating COPD patients.

In the first clip below, we asked Dr. Belperio to recap what he discovered upon examining Leonard and running a series of tests.

In the second clip, we asked "Dr. B" -- this is what Leonard called him -- if Leonard had ever discussed with him his desire to educate and create awareness for COPD. By this point, Leonard had become a strong advocate for COPD awareness/education, which has now become known as his "Final Mission."

What is the weirdest food combination that you make?

Here are some answers from Yahoo!...

-Bacon and egg ice cream

-Balsamic vinegar lightly drizzled on vanilla ice cream. It sounds weird, but it is so good.

-I eat vegetable crackers and drink vanilla coke...but my dad likes red chile with coffee....kinda weird

-Pizza- topped with mac and cheese

-Banana sandwiches. you smash up a banana in a bowl (one that's past it's pretty yellow color and starting to brown), mix some mayo/miracle whip into it to make it creamy then spread it on bread. really, it's better than it sounds, lol.

-Cottage cheese and sliced bananas with ketchup mixed in. Sounds gross but try it, it's actually not bad at all.

-Mayo sugar sandwich. (You put the mayo on first, sprinkly some sugar, then blend it and voila.)

-Sometimes I like to dip hotdogs in yogurt. Just because we have a flavor I don't like but needs to be eaten.

-Animal crackers in applesauce. (preferably cinnamon applesauce)

-Apple wood smoked bacon chocolate bar

-Kraft Dinner with Sauerkraut a combination discovered by my partner Dwight. Weird food making can be fun! Write yours in the comments!

Here's the recipe:
Gotta be KD!

This is a real taste treat!

Ingredients:

(2) Boxes Kraft Dinner
(1) Litre jar of Wine sauerkraut
(1) Tablespoon Chopped Onion
(1) Tablespoon margarine
(1) 250 ml Sour cream
Dill Weed (to taste)

Make the two boxes of KD as per the instructions, but do NOT add milk. (You need to still add margarine and the 'cheese' parts)

While the pasta is boiling, in a fry pan melt 2 TBS of margarine add the sauerkraut and onion flakes and some dill weed. Heat at med-hi without a lid, so that the moisture evaporates. Make sure you stir it so it won't burn.

When the KD is done, Add the sauerkraut mixture to the KD. Stir in well - serve. Makes 4 portions, (depending on your degree of hungriness!)

Enjoy!

Unkind Words Are Weapons

by Michael Josephson, WhatWillMatter.com
Unkind Words Are Weapons - Michael Josephson
With four teenage daughters, I frequently find myself correcting, disciplining, or simply protesting unnecessary and unkind comments certain to anger or wound a sister and evoke counterattacks that fill the air with nastiness.

Hoping to get them to think before they speak in the future, I often ask, “What did you expect to accomplish by that remark?” and “Did it make things better or worse?” It rarely makes a difference.

It’s as if their instinct to express anger or utter sarcasm, accusations, and complaints is too strong to allow for wise strategies like “Think before you speak” to operate.

It disappoints and frustrates me that my children are often unkind to one another and so quick to make foolish comments that have no constructive purpose. Yet it’s even more troublesome when adults engage in the same senseless and destructive behavior.

It may be a husband’s unfiltered remark about his wife’s smothering style, a wife’s dig about her husband’s lack of energy, a parents’ comment, “That’s why you have no friends” or ‘Why can’t you be more like your brother?” or an aunt’s unwanted advice, “If you want to get married, lose weight.”

Often the content of a remark is objectively objectionable and they never should have been uttered, but tone, timing, or setting can make even seemingly harmless observations hurtful.

We have to remember that words are weapons, sometimes weapons of mass destruction.

Verbal assaulters may defend their unguided missiles with claimed innocence: “I didn’t mean it that way” when the real question is “How was the remark likely to be received?”

Another lame excuse is “I was just telling the truth,” without considering whether that truth needed to be said. Honesty does not preclude tact. It’s not a sin to have an unexpressed thought.

We may not always be able to shield ourselves from the darts and arrows of inconsiderate or mean-spirited folks, but we can resolve to be more thoughtful in our own communications.

We can be more kind more consistently. We can follow the Golden Rule and a few other age-old wisdoms like: “Think before you speak” and “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.”

This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts.

Driving while 'InTEXTicated'

The very real human consequences that can result from driving while 'InTEXTicated'.

An 18-year-old girl plowed directly into the rear of another vehicle. She was going 70 mph. She apparently never even saw them. You see, she had been texting at the time.

4X4

You can see that she hit them dead-center with no attempt to slow or evade the collision.

4X4
She hit dead-center on her 2008 Yukon SUV as well. She escaped unscathed.

There was no blowout, no wet road, no curve or hill or fog to limit visibility. This girl clearly should have been able to see the traffic conditions at least a half mile ahead had she been looking and not texting. She nearly killed a beautiful 3-year-old child?

Here's a personal look at the real human cost of texting while driving:
Griffin before the accident.

Griffin and Mom and Dad

Griffen the day after 4 hours of surgery to repair multiple skull fractures. He would surely have died or been severely disabled had they not been minutes away (by StarFlight helicopter) from Austin's world-class children's Dell Children's Medical Center and neurosurgeon Dr. Timothy George.

Griffin

Day 4 - watching a movie on his Dad's iPhone.
The swelling of his head will go away, but that scar from ear-to-ear will be with him forever.

Griffin

Feeling better. Mmmmm - mac-n-cheese. :-)

Griffin

Day 5 - feeling much better. My granddad bought me my very own iPod and loaded it with movies. Life is good .

Griffin

This morning. All my tubes are finally out. I'm going home today!
Note how much the swelling has improved in just three days.

Griffin

It's almost unbelievable that it's been only five days since the accident that nearly claimed his life.

All the medical experts involved expect him to make a full recovery.
Pretty soon he'll be all healed up and back to normal - thank the Lord!
In only six weeks he'll be allowed to be just as active as any other 3-year-old.

Griffin

Phone company records of text messages are irrefutable and accurate to the second; so it would be an easy matter to prove in court that a person was texting at the time of an accident.. As with drunken driving, a jail sentence (no matter the driver's age) will be mandatory whenever anyone is injured by an InTEXTicated driver.

I encourage you to forward this email to all your friends. We must try to stop 'Driving While InTEXTicated' before more innocent people are maimed or killed.

Jet Turbine Engine vs A Bird....Guess who wins!

Bird vs. Jet Engine...

Below is video of an Rolls Royce engine on a test stand undergoing a 'Bird Ingestion' test. This test is accomplished by firing a bird, [generally a dead chicken complete with feathers and internal organs] at the engine. The bird's weight is a function of the inlet and fan diameter, This test is considered a success if the failure was completely contained, [i. e. No engine parts penetrated the engine cases or the aircraft cowling and there is no sustained external fire]. It does not take long for the engine to digest the bird as well as a significant number of its' own blades & vanes. The video lasts 33 seconds and the bird is fired into the engine at the 17 second mark......

Shake, Rattle, and Roll..............

Now you have some idea what the pilot of that US Air flight faced when he ingested birds into both engines simultaneously!! It also gives you a fair idea why the one engine's mounts failed after the water landing and dropped off the wing.

Your Parrot is Dead, Señor

At dawn the telephone rings, 'Hello, Señor Rod? This is Ernesto, the caretaker at your country house.'

'Ah yes, Ernesto. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?'

'Um, I am just calling to advise you, Señor Rod, that your parrot, he is dead'

'My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International competition?'

'Si, Señor, that's the one.'

'Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from?'

'From eating the rotten meat, Señor Rod.'

'Rotten meat? Who the hell fed him rotten meat?'

'Nobody, Señor. He ate the meat of the dead horse.'

'Dead horse? What dead horse?'

'The thoroughbred, Señor Rod.'

'My prize thoroughbred is dead?'

'Yes Señor Rod, he died from all that work pulling the water cart.'

'Are you insane?? What water cart?'

'The one we used to put out the fire, Señor.'

'Good Lord!! What fire are you talking about, man??'

'The one at your house, Señor! A candle fell and the curtains caught on fire.'

'What the hell?? Are you saying that my mansion is destroyed because of a candle?? !!'

'Yes, Señor Rod.'

'But there's electricity at the house! What was the candle for?'

'For the funeral, Señor Rod.'

'WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL??!!'

'Your wife's, Señor Rod', she showed up very late one night and I thought she was a thief, so I hit her with your new tailor made R580 XD golf club.'

SILENCE . . . . . . .. . . LONG SILENCE . . . . . . . .

'Ernesto, if you broke that driver, you're in deep shit!!'
