Wise Words

Be Wise

Be Wise!Inferiority

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

- Eleanor Roosevelt -

Be Wise!Stay safe in a thunderstorm

1. Be aware that lightning can follow electrical wires and phone lines.

2. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance.

3. If you are driving during a thunderstorm, you should stay in your car with the windows closed

4. You shouldn’t take a shower, wash dishes or do laundry.

5. If you are swimming or boating when a storm starts, head for shore immediately.

Be Wise!Cranking Down the Volume

Playing your tunes more softly during rush hour traffic might decrease your tension in the car. Cranking up the volume of your music may increase your tension while driving. A recent study showed that college students listening to three different amplitudes of music were more likely to have higher heart rates the higher the volume went and vice versa for lowering the volume. Hence, softly played music may sooth the savage beast during rush hour madness.

Be Wise!VALUE IS IN THE BELIEVING

Paper money, like virtue, has value only so long as people believe that it does.

Be Wise!Down And Up...Up And Down...

If you try to look down at people from up where you are.

They will look up at you and see nothing but someone going down!

- Julie Sullivan -

Be Wise!Nothing Is Everything

The fact that money isn’t everything is irrelevant, because nothing else is everything either, but money isn’t really a bad first step on the way towards everything.

Making Sense Of English

Nothin here
Lets face it
English is a stupid language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France.

We sometimes take English for granted
But if we examine its paradoxes we find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly
Boxing rings are square
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don't fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth
Shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth
If the teacher taught,
Why didn't the preacher praught.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways
How can the weather be as hot as hell on one day
And as cold as hell on another

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn't a race at all)

That is why
When the stars are out they are visible
But when the lights are out they are invisible
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts
But when I wind up this poem
It ends.

YOMI KIM WAS VOTED THE PRETTIEST MAN IN ASIA???

Nope, SHE IS A WOMAN !

From snopes.com: Origins: The person pictured above isn’t named Yomi Kim Hunter, isn’t Korean-American, isn’t a man, and wasn’t voted “prettiest man in Asia.” These are photographs of Chinese actress Fan BingBing (also variously rendered as Fan Bing Bing or Fan Bing-Bing), who was born — and remains — a woman. As described by Wikipedia:

Fan was born in Qingdao, Shandong, and raised in Yantai, Shandong. She graduated from Shanghai Xie Jin’s Star School and Shanghai Theatre Academy.

In 1997, Fan rose to stardom for her supporting role as Jin Suo in the Taiwanese television drama Princess Pearl and its sequel in 1998, which starred Zhao Wei and Ruby Lin in the leading roles. Over the next few years, through appearances in many films and television dramas, she became one of the more well-known actresses in mainland China. After achieving success in her acting career, Fan also released albums, posed for magazine covers and became a spokesperson for several commercial brands.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock

Who Wrote "Precious Lord?"

Did you know that Tommy Dorsey wrote this song? I surely didn't. What a wonderful story of how God CAN heal the brokenhearted! Beautiful, isn't it?

THE BIRTH OF THE HYMN "PRECIOUS LORD"

Back in 1932, I was a fairly new husband. My wife, Nettie and I were living in a little apartment on Chicago's south side. One hot August afternoon I had to go to St. Louis where I was to be the featured soloist at a large revival meeting. I didn't want to go; Nettie was in the last month of pregnancy with our first child, but a lot of people were expecting me in St. Louis. I kissed Nettie goodbye, clattered downstairs to our Model A and, in a fresh Lake Michigan breeze, chugged out of Chicago on Route 66.

However, outside the city, I discovered that in my anxiety at leaving, I had forgotten my music case. I wheeled around and headed back.

I found Nettie sleeping peacefully. I hesitated by her bed; something was strongly telling me to stay But eager to get on my way, and not wanting to disturb Nettie, I shrugged off the feeling and quietly slipped out of the room with my music.

The next night, in the steaming St. Louis heat, the crowd called on me to sing again and again. When I finally sat down, a messenger boy ran up with a Western Union Telegram. I ripped open the envelope.... Pasted on the yellow sheet were the words: YOUR WIFE JUST DIED.

People were happily singing and clapping around me, but I could hardly keep from crying out. I rushed to a phone and called home. All I could hear on the other end was "Nettie is dead Nettie is dead.'"

When I got back, I learned that Nettie had given birth to a boy. I swung between grief and joy. Yet that same night, the baby died. I buried Nettie and our little boy together, in the same casket. Then I fell apart. For days I closeted myself. I felt that God had done me an injustice. I didn't want to serve Him anymore or write gospel songs I just wanted to go back to that jazz world I once knew so well. But then, as I hunched alone in that dark apartment those first sad days, I thought back to the afternoon I went to St. Louis. Something kept telling me to stay with Nettie. Was that something God? Oh, if I had paid more attention to Him that day, I would have stayed and been with Nettie when she died.

From that moment on I vowed to listen more closely to Him. But still I was lost in grief. Everyone was kind to me, especially one friend. The following Saturday evening he took me up to Maloney's Poro College , a neighborhood music school. It was quiet; the late evening sun crept through the curtained windows.

I sat down at the piano, and my hands began to browse over the keys. Something happened to me then. I felt at peace. I felt as though I could reach out and touch God. I found myself playing a melody. Once in my head they just seemed to fall into place: 'Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I am tired, I am weak, I am worn, through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light, take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.'

The Lord gave me these words and melody, He also healed my spirit. I learned that when we are in our deepest grief, when we feel farthest from God, this is when He is closest, and when we are most open to His restoring power.

And so I go on living for God willingly and joyfully, until that day comes when He will take me and gently lead me home.

- - - -Tommy Dorsey

For those too young to know who he is, Tommy Dorsey was a well-known band leader in the 1930's and 40's.

Worth the reading, wasn't it? Think on the message for a while.

Thought you might like to share this. . . . . I just did.

*Thanks, Dad

Meth Dangers

Dealing with Teenage Methamphetamine Use

Identifying and dealing with teenage drug use is a frightening prospect for any parent. But we live in a world where teens have so many opportunities for losing their way. They have the time and money for vices and less supervision at home. And drugs today are even more powerful and addictive than ever.
Methamphetamine (known on the street as "speed," "meth," "crank," "crystal-meth") is a central nervous system stimulant that is among the most dangerous drugs available. Like cocaine, it is a powerful "upper" that produces alertness and feelings of elation, along with a variety of adverse reactions. Methamphetamine is sometimes called the "poor man’s cocaine," because it costs nearly the same as cocaine with much longer lasting effects.
Methamphetamine can be swallowed, smoked, snorted, or injected. Under the influence of the drug, users often become agitated and "wired." Their behaviour becomes unpredictable: friendly and calm one moment, angry and terrified the next. Once users become too tired to continue using or run out of meth, they will begin to "crash." Initially, the crash is marked by agitated depression, which soon gives way to lethargy, followed by a long deep sleep. Once the user awakens, the depression returns and may last for days. This is the time when the potential for suicide is high.

With prolonged high-dose use or long binges, stimulant psychosis may develop. User may feel intensely paranoid, hear voices, and experience bizarre delusions (such as thinking that people are talking about and/or following them). Methamphetamine-induced panic and psychosis can be extremely dangerous and may result in incidents of extreme violence.

Dangers and consequences of meth use include:
  • sleeplessness
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • skin ulceration and infection, the result of picking at imaginary bugs
  • paranoia, anxiety, irritability
  • depression
  • increased blood pressure due to the constriction of blood vessels (may produce headaches, chest pain, or irregular heartbeat and lead to stroke or heart attack)
  • seizures
  • permanent brain cell damage
  • for intravenous (IV) users: AIDS, hepatitis, infections and sores at the injection site, and infection of the heart lining and valves (endocarditis)

If you are a parent concerned that your teenager may be using meth, there are symptoms you should look for. You may notice a striking degeneration of your child's attitude, school attendance and marks, dress, personal hygiene, complexion and skin condition, along with increased mood swings, weight loss, and irregular sleeping patterns such as long waking and sleeping periods (days). A change of friends, secrecy, missing monies and valuables, dropping out of extra curriculum activities, and verbal aggression and/or the threat of physical aggression are also warning signs. If you suspect your child of drug use, contact a professional or counselor to help guide you through the process of acknowledging, confronting, and dealing with this problem. Professionals, non-profits, and faith-based organizations are available throughout Saskatchewan to help you and your family through this difficult time. Gay Singers

Not sure if this is interesting to you, I found it fascinating how many great singers happen to be gay (and out!)

Ivri Lider
Lance Bass
Ricky Martin
Clay Aiken
Adam Lambert
Boy George
Tom Goss
Jeffery Straker

to name a few.

Here is one of my favourites:

Ivri LiderIt’s [was] a big year for openly gay Israeli pop star Ivri Lider. His first U.S. single, "Jesse," was released, exposing the singer to an entirely new fanbase and the music video has been in constant rotation on Logo (AfterElton.com’s parent company) ever since. He also performed a song in The Bubble, for which the singer also composed the score. If that weren’t enough, he was also selected as one of Out Magazine’s "Out 100" last month.

Gay blog Hunk du Jour scored an interview with the singer, in which he talks a bit about his upcoming Hebrew and English language albums and his ongoing professional relationship with director Eytan Fox. The singer addresses the fairly liberal attitude towards LGBT people in his native country and how things have changed since he first publicly came out in 2002:

I can definitely say there has been a shift. I think famous people coming out is an extremely important thing that helps to change lots of peoples' views. It also helps a lot of young people who are dealing with their sexuality and the feelings of being isolated and alone in the world. With regard to Israel, or at least Tel Aviv, you could probably call it one of the gayest cities in the world. For most people here, it's just not an issue.

The singer has also apparently found love since the last time we mentioned him on this blog:

I have a boyfriend for over a year now. His name is Mike Phifer and we met in New York. He moved to Israel nine months ago and now we live together here in Tel Aviv. I suppose I want the same thing everyone else wants in a man, someone who's smart, kind, cuddly, and really great in bed.

It’s definitely nice to see someone who’s managed to find worldwide success while making no apologies for being an out and proud gay man. Here’s hoping that Lider’s success continues when his new albums drop later this year. A U.S. tour is planned to begin sometime in March, before the album’s release.

Makes you feel pretty bright.....

I have been a Travel Agent for thirty Years. Here is why we're in trouble!

1. I had a New Hampshire Congresswoman ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn't get messed up by being near the window.

2. I got a call from a candidate'sstaffer, who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information, then she interrupted me with, "I'm not trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in Massachusetts."Without trying to make her look like the stupid one, I calmly explained, "Cape Cod is in Massachusetts, Capetown is in Africa." Her response....(click).

3. A senior Vermont Congressman called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando. He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that is not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. He replied, "Don't lie to me. I looked on the map and Florida is a very thin state!"

4. I got a call from a law maker's wife who asked, "Is it possible to see England from Canada?" I said, "No." She said, "But they look so close on the map."

5. An aide for a Bush cabinet member once called and asked if he could rent a car in Dallas. When I pulled up the reservation, I noticed he had only a 1-hour layover in Dallas. When I asked him why he wanted to rent a car, he said, "I heard Dallas was a big airport and we will need a car to drive between the gates to save time."

6. An Illinois Congresswoman called last week. She needed to know how it was possible that her flight from Detroit left at 8:20 a.m. and got into Chicago at 8:33 a.m. I tried to explain that Michigan was an hour ahead of Illinois, but she could not understand the concept of time zones.

Finally, I told her the plane went very fast, and she bought that!

7. A New York lawmaker called and asked,"Do airlines put your physical description on your bag so they know whose luggage belongs to whom?" I said, "No, why do you ask?" She replied, "Well, when I checked in with the airline they put a tag on my luggage that said (FAT), and I'm overweight. I think that is very rude!"

After putting her on hold for a minute while I "looked into it" (I was actually laughing) I came back and explained the city code for Fresno, CA is (FAT), and that the airline was just putting a destination tag on her luggage.

8. A Senator's aide called to inquire about a trip package to Hawaii. After going over all the cost info, she asked, "Would it be cheaper to fly to California and then take the train to Hawaii?"

9. I just got off the phone with a freshman Congressman who asked, "How do I know which plane to get on?" I asked him what exactly he meant, to which he replied, "I was told my flight number is 823, but none of these darn planes have numbers on them."

10. A lady Senator called and said, "I need to fly to Pepsi-Cola, FL. Do I have to get on one of those little computer planes?" I asked if she meant fly to Pensacola, FL on a commuter plane. She said, "Yeah, whatever!"

11. A senior Senator called and had a question about the documents he needed in order to fly to China. After a lengthy discussion about passports, I reminded him that he needed a visa."Oh, no I don't. I've been to China many times and never had to have one of those." I double-checked and sure enough, his stay required a visa. When I told him this he said, "Look, I've been to China four times and everytime they have accepted my American Express!"

12. A New Mexico Congresswoman called to make reservations, "I want to go from Chicago to Rhino, New York." I was at a loss for words. Finally, I said, "Are you sure that's the name of the town?" "Yes, what flights do you have?" replied the lady. After some searching, I told her "I'm sorry, ma'am, I've looked up every airport code in the country and can't find a Rhino anywhere." The lady retorted, "Oh, don't be silly! Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!" I scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, "You don't mean Buffalo, do you?" "That's it! I knew it was a big animal," she said.

Now you know why Government is in the shape that it's in!!

The Workout

The Doctor told me I should start an exercise program. Not wanting to harm this old body,
I've devised the following:

Beat around the bush
Jump to conclusions
Climb the walls
Wade through the morning paper

Drag my heels
Push my luck
Make Mountains out of mole hills
Hit the nail on the head

Bend over backwards
Jump on the Band Wagon
Run around in circles

Toot my own horn
Pull out all the stops
Add fuel to the fire

Open a can of worms
Put my foot in my mouth
Start the ball rolling
Go over the edge

Pick up the pieces.

Kneel in prayer
Bow my head in thanksgiving
Uplift my hands in praise
Hug someone and encourage them

What a Workout!!

A Tale of 2 Blonde Drag Queens....

Miss Thing, and Priscilla Prickme, two very elegant, but very drunk drag queens, were staggering their way home.

But, no matter how messy they were, these girls could spot a find a block away. Especially if it was glittery and possibly valuable.

As they stumbled along the street, Miss Thing noticed a gold toned compact on the sidewalk and trying oh so hard to maintain her balance, leaned down to pick it up.

She opened it, looked in the mirror, and said, "Hmmm, this person looks familiar."

Priscilla said, "Let me look."

So Miss Thing handed her the compact.

Priscilla looked in the mirror then turned to her friend and exclaimed: "You dumbass -- that's *me*!

The Woe Is Oz Book Project aims to have issues five and six completed by April, 2013 and the publication of volume one of the graphic novel to follow shortly after. “This funding is crucial,” says creator Ethan Tarshish, series writer and creator, “Because it will allow us to complete the first arc of our story. Kickstarter, founded in 2009, is a crowdsourcing platform that helps creative projects come to life. The platform is powered by an all-or-nothing funding method; projects must hit their predetermined funding goal before any money changes hands.

To thank users for their contributions, Woe Is Oz has devised several tiers of rewards, ranging from signed issues and original art, to the opportunity of being a character in an upcoming issue.

Hey Diddle Diddle

by Christy Strick, OnePageStories.com

I spent all day painting the guest room a quiet yellow the color of baby chicks. Though when I was finished it reminded me of scrambled eggs, so I ate breakfast at 4:00 in the afternoon and wasn’t hungry when you got home, hadn’t even thought of it until you asked, “What’s for dinner?”

You didn’t notice the flecks of paint that dotted my cheeks and nested in my hair. I imagine you would have mentioned them if you had. You noticed there was no food in the oven.

“God, Lil. If I’d known you weren’t cooking I’d have brought something home.” So I fried up pork chops and onions, the smell curdling my stomach until finally I had to lay on the bed so the nausea would pass.

Next day I sketched out a cow jumping over the moon along one yellow wall, and had all the brown, white and darker yellow filled in by the time Oprah started. I remembered to thaw the chicken, and the smell wasn’t nearly as bloody as the pork, so you didn’t have to eat your dinner alone. But didn’t you see the brushes in the jar by the sink, the bristles soaking in cloudy water?

By the end of the week there was the cow and the moon, a cat playing the fiddle, a crazy laughing dog, and a dish and spoon running toward the doorway. When I was a kid I used to wonder where the dish and spoon were headed in such a hurry. These days I think they were running away from something.

Do you remember when we were first married, how we laughed about what we’d name our children? We’d be like celebrities, we said, with boys named Zeus and Tweeter, and girls named Sahara and Sunshine. Lately, though, I keep a scribbled list of names in a notebook, old-fashioned names from our family like Louise and Emmaline, and the beauty of them makes me cry.

The day I went to Barnes and Noble and bought What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, you came home and told me about the layoffs at Lowe’s, and how there’d been talk of eliminating your department. You said how glad you were it was just me and you to worry about, how thankful you were there wasn’t a baby to provide for. I slipped the books into the guest room and told you everything would be fine.

I took up knitting blankets in soft pastel colors, though I’d heard primary colors were more stimulating. At night you step over my yarn bag to get to your cracked leather lounger where you sprawl and watched TV until you fall asleep. Most nights I leave you there and climb the stairs to the guest room, stretching out on the bed with a half finished blanket over me, wondering what the paintings will look like to a tiny person who doesn’t know what a cow or a cat or the moon is. It’s hard to tell sometimes what is stimulating and what is scary. What might be beautiful to one person might scare the hell out of somebody else.

I’d been anxious to tell you at first, to show off my growing breasts and the swell of my stomach. But the longer you didn’t notice, the more you worried about layoffs and mortgages and bills, the more I hugged my secret close to me, my arms folded across my belly the way I’d seen so many women do, long before they were even showing.

I found a crib at Good Will, and it took me a week to clean it up and reassemble it under the watchful eyes of the characters dancing across the wall. I added Mother Hubbard to the headboard and the Three Little Pigs to the footboard, and you couldn’t even tell anymore that it was used.

Last night I sat in the guest room and read nursery rhymes aloud, practicing, until the soft yellow walls lulled me to sleep. I woke with the newly finished baby blanket clutched in my hand, and I felt happy, not afraid at all. When I came down to the den I found you still asleep in your recliner. I tucked the nursery rhyme book under your arm and spread the blanket across your chest. Sleeping, you looked happy, and not afraid at all.

Giggles, Guffaws, and Groaners

The two inventors of the bungee rope went to Spain to test their invention. They built a 50-foot tower and, once completed, one of the guys stood on the edge of the platform and dove into the air with the rope tied to his feet. The other guy, standing up on the platform, waited until his friend returned up so that he could grab him. The first time his friend sprung up, he tried to grab him but missed and noticed that his head was swollen. The next time, he missed again and again there was a bruise on his head and face. This time, with much concern, he dove forward to get his partner, pulled him in and asked, "What happened? Is the cord too long?" His partner replied with his face all bloody, "What is piñata?"

Inside a bowling alley, "Please be quiet. We need to hear a pin drop."

In a cafeteria, "Shoes are required to eat in the cafeteria. Socks can eat any place they want."

Whichever bat drinks more blood, will be the winner? So the first bat goes and comes back after 10 minutes. Her mouth was full of blood. Dracula says: "Congratulations, how did you do that?" The bat said: "Do you see that tower? Behind it there is a house. I went in and sucked the blood of all the family". "Very good" said Dracula. The second bat goes and comes back after 5 minutes all her face covered in blood. Dracula astonished says, "How did you do that?" The bat replies " Do you see that tower? Behind it there is a school. I went in and drunk the blood of all the children". "Impressive" said Dracula. Now the third bat goes and comes back after three minutes literally covered in blood from top to toe. Dracula is stunned. "How on earth did you do that????" he asked. And the bat replies. "Do you see this tower?" Dracula replies with a yes. And the bat says "Well, I didn't".

A couple is in bed sleeping when there's a rat-a-tat-tat on the door.

The husband rolls over and looks at the clock, and it's half past 3 in the morning. I'm not getting out of bed at this time," he thinks, and rolls over. Then, a louder knock follows. So he drags himself out of bed, goes downstairs, opens the door, and there's a man standing there. It didn't take the homeowner long to realize the man was drunk.

"Hi there," slurs the stranger, "Can you give me a push?" "No, get lost. It's half past three and I was in bed," says the man as he slams the door. He goes back up to bed and tell his wife what happened and she says, "That wasn't very nice of you. Remember that night we broke down in the pouring rain on the way to pick the kids up from the baby-sitter and you had to knock on that man's house to get us started again? What would have happened if he'd told us to get lost?"

"But the guy was drunk," says the husband.

"It doesn't matter," says the wife. He needs our help and it would be the Christian thing to help him." So the husband gets out of bed again, gets dressed, and goes downstairs.

He opens the door, and not being able to see the stranger anywhere,

He shouts, "Hey, do you still want a push?"

And he hears a voice cry out, "Yeah, please."

So, still being unable to see the stranger he shouts, "Where are you?" The drunk replies, "Over here, on the swing."

Little Johnny, Teacher's Pet

Little Johnny and his classmates are supposed
to draw a picture on the board

James returned to his seat
the teacher called on Ernie next

Ernie returned to his seat
Now it was Suzy's turn

Suzy returned to her seat
Next, the teacher called Jerry to the board

Jerry returned to his seat
Kim was called to the board

Kim returned to her seat

About this time little Johnny began
waving his arm hysterically.
Little Johnny was well known for
being dirty-minded, so the
teacher was reluctant to
call on him for anything.
But as the teacher looked
at the picture on the chalkboard,
she thought that there was no
way that little Johnny could
possibly do anything to make
this picture dirty.

So she called on little Johnny, and he ran to the chalkboard...

Little Johnny had done it again!

"and that's the truth! thbpthbpthbp!!!"*
