A Horse's Tail

Pony Express
A Horse's Tail...

Does the statement, "Because we've always done it that way..." ring any bells...?

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.

Why was that gauge used?

Because that's the way they built them in England, and English expatriates built the US Railroads.

Why did the English build them like that?

Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that's the gauge they used.

Why did "they" use that gauge then?

Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.

Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?

Well, if they tried to use any other spacing, the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that's the spacing of the wheel ruts.

So who built those old rutted roads?

Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (and England) for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.

And the ruts in the roads?

Roman war chariots formed the initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels. Since the chariots were made for Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing.

The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is derived from the original specifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot. And bureaucracies live forever.

So the next time you are handed a spec and told we have always done it that way and wonder what horse's ass came up with that, you may be exactly right, because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses.

Now the twist to the story...

When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory in Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs would have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site.

The railroad line from the factory happens to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as you now know, is about as wide as two horses' behinds.

So, a major Space Shuttle design feature of what is arguably the world's most advanced transportation system was determined over two thousand years ago by the width of a horse's ass.

And you thought being a horse's ass wasn't important.

Horse's ass

City Workers

At last, a blonde male joke!

There were two blonde guys working for the city council. One would dig a hole, the other would follow behind him and fill the hole in. They worked furiously all day without rest, one guy digging a hole, the other guy filling it in again.

An onlooker was amazed at their hard work, but couldn't understand what they were doing. So he asked the hole digger, "I appreciate the effort you are putting into your work, but what's the story? You dig a hole and your partner follows behind and fills it up again."

The hole digger wiped his brow and sighed, "Well, normally we are a three-man team, but the guy who plants the trees is sick today."

Union Problems

Unions are killing this country, and here is a prime example. I don't know about other areas of the country, but a growing trend here is for people to be a little on the lazy side.

It is not that uncommon for as many as 14 to 18 Union People to just stand around and watch while only one person is doing the work.

As you can see in this photo, the situation is out of hand. I hope it's not happening in your area as much. Click here.

Hospital Stay

A man is lying in bed in the hospital with an oxygen mask over his mouth when a young nurse appears to sponge his hands and feet. "Nurse", he mumbles from behind the mask, "are my testicles black?"

Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, "I don't know, I'm only here to wash your hands and feet".
Again he struggles to ask, "But nurse, are my testicles black?"

Finally, she pulls back the covers, raises his gown, holds his penis in one hand and his testicles in her other hand and takes a close look, and say's, " there's nothing wrong with them"!

The man pulls off his oxygen mask and replies, "That was very nice but, are... my... test...results...back?

"WOO-HOO!!!!!"

Lotto 649

I don't know if you are aware of this (If you live in Canada, you can't miss it - literally as when you win in the lottery, you get subjected to a computerized female voice shouting, "WOO-HOO!".

This is due to the theft of winning tickets by store clerks:

-->Provincial Police announced theft and fraud charges against a Mississauga man for theft of a winning lottery ticket and a fraudulent claim of the ticket's $5.7 million prize money. The investigation is being led by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) with the assistance of the OPP Anti-Rackets Section and Provincial Asset Forfeiture Unit.

The investigation is part of a broader OPP investigation into fraudulent Ontario lottery game prize claims by Ontario lottery retailers and employees. The investigation focuses on "insider wins' between 1999 and 2006.

Charged with 2 Counts of Fraud over $5,000 and 1 Count of Theft over $5,000 is Hafiz Zulqarnain MALIK, age 60, of Mississauga, Ontario. The investigation revealed that the winning Lotto 6/49 ticket was purchased in June of 2004 and that the $5,750,256 prize money was claimed by MALIK in January of 2005.

The investigation also revealed that the winning ticket belonged to a group of four people from the Toronto area, and that MALIK fraudulently obtained the winning ticket from the rightful owners and subsequently collected the prize money.

As a part of the investigation, assets of MALIK valued at approximately $5 million have been restrained or seized including restraint orders on his Mississauga home, an investment account and the seizure of two motor vehicles.

The investigation into other alleged fraudulent Ontario lottery prize claims is continuing.
<-- font="">

The voice happens whether or not you win a free ticket $1.00, or a major prize. The major prizes do not display on the screen, but you still get that annoying "
WOO-HOO!!".

I think that there are better sayings available than "WOO-HOO!!". Below are some suggestions from The Wizard of 'OZ':

- "We have a Win-Ner here!" (like a sideshow skill games carny)
- "Ching-ching-ching" (like a slot payout)
- "Buck-buck-buck-buck!"
- "Ya spent $10 bucks, ya won $2 bucks! Congratulations!"
- "LOSER" (when you don't win)
- "Sukah!! (when you've spent $20 but win a free ticket)
- "The government of Canada thanks you for your generous donation so that we may continue to "Spend Your Money!"
- "You Won! Now you are going to get 'bankers'!

Any other ideas? Make a comment to submit yours!

Ask The Wizard (Beeps on boot)

The Wizard Of 'OZ' Dear Wizard of OZ,

What ia the meaning of the beeps that come when my system boots up?

Signed,

Bleeping Bleep Beeps

Dear Beeps,

WOW! What a question!

The answer to that question is both simple and complicated at the same time.

Those beeps are called the BIOS beep code. It is an audible code that may beep in a specific pattern to indicate what the problem may be with the system. When the computer system is starting to boot up it performs a "Power On Self Test" or the "POST." At the completion of the POST if there are no problems detected there is usually a short beep and the operating system is loaded.

During the POST, if there is a problem starting the system there may be a visual error message on the display as well describing the problem. If the problem is happening before the video is initialized than the BIOS will play audible beeps to let you know there is a problem. The beep codes can be difficult to determine what they mean. You need to listen carefully for the beeps to determine what the pattern may be.

AMI and Award are the most common BIOS' at this time. They are writing the BIOS for most motherboard manufacturers as well as custom BIOS' for the majority of computer manufacturers. Below is a list of some of the most common AMI and Award BIOS beep codes. Depending on the type of BIOS you have or the brand of your computer there may be different beep patterns.

However, manufacturers of motherboards and the BIOS companies usually have copies of the code for your specific motherboard and BIOS.

Click here for the explanations of both BIOS codes.

Hope this helps,

Yrs,

The Wizard

Straight Guys Kissing

BEN KISSES JIMMY, DANIEL KISSES GEORGE, JAVIER KISSES JULIAN, JAMES KISS DANIEL

Our Nuke Liplock Clock (which tracks how long since Luke and Noah last kissed on As the World Turns) currently shows 158 days since the gay teens last kissed, but thanks to all the macking going on between the straight guys, one could be forgiven for hardly noticing.

I know spring is just around the corner, but all of this same-sex boy/boy liplocking is starting to make me feel like I'm in Europe as opposed to the U.S. where male best friends usually just grunt at each other in greeting. And that's getting pretty intimate.

But in the past two weeks, we've had no fewer than four examples of straight guys snogging away at each other. Let's dissect the kisses, shall we?

The Genie

A man was walking on the beach one day and he found a bottle half buried in the sand. He decided to open it. Inside was a genie.

Life is like a box of chocolatesThe genie said,” I will grant you three wishes and three wishes only."

The man thought about his first wish and decided, “I think I want 1 million dollars transferred to a Swiss bank account. POOF!

Next he wished for a Ferrari red in color. POOF!

There was the car sitting in front of him. He asked for his final wish, " I wish I was irresistible to women." POOF! He turned into a box of chocolates.

Nutmeg – Attracts Women & Bestows Fortune

According to folklore, nutmeg strengthen men’s’ virility. Sixteenth century monks counseled young men to always keep nutmeg oils close by so when the opportunity arose, they could quickly anoint their genitals in order to enhance their masculinity and pleasure. To attract admirers, men often sprinkled nutmeg under their left armpits before attending a social event.

The spice was also used to protect against a wide variety of misfortunes such as boils, rheumatism, and broken bones. In Elizabethan times it was believed that nutmeg could ward off the plague, making the spice highly covetous.

In reality, the substance comes from the nutmeg tree, a large evergreen native to the Moluccas, an archipelago in Indonesia known as the Spice Islands. The nutmeg seed is enclosed in a speckled yellow, edible fruit, which is about the size and shape of a large egg. When the fruit is halved, there is a net-like, bright red covering over the seed. This is the aril that when dried, is sold as mace. Under the aril is a dark shiny nut-like pit, and inside that is the oval shaped seed which is the nutmeg.

Like other spices, nutmeg may contain a variety of healing properties. The spice has been used to treat dysentery, gastroenteritis, vomiting, bloating, and indigestion. In India’s Ayurvedic medicine it is used to treat digestive disorders, urinary incontinence and premature ejaculation. Nutmeg is also known to ease symptoms of arthritis, muscle aches, neuralgia, poor circulation, and rheumatism.

Nutmeg can even take its users on a walk to the wild side: its aromas come from oil of myristica, a narcotic that can cause hallucinations. Such delirium, however, cannot be induced with even the most generous culinary usage.

Nutmeg is normally used in sweet, spicy recipes including pies, puddings, custards, cookies and spice cakes. It’s wonderful to sprinkle it over a pork roast along with salt and pepper or to toss it into meatballs. There is no better way to enliven vegetables than to season them with this versatile spice. Try it on squash or yams, over buttered cauliflower or green beans. Italian cooks love it on spinach, as well as in their pasta dishes.

It combines well with many cheeses, and is included in soufflés and cheese sauces. It enhances such soups as tomato, slit pea, chicken and black bean. It seasons egg dishes and vegetables like cabbage, spinach, broccoli, beans onions and eggplant. It also gives wonderful flavor to Italian sausages, Scottish haggis and Middle Eastern lamb dishes. And of course, it is indispensable to eggnog and numerous mulled wines and punches. The aroma will bring hungry people to your table the instant you say, "It's ready!"

Riders Trade Joseph! What the Hell!!!??

Kerry JosephToday the Rider's Head Coach announced that Kerry Joseph, CFL's Most Valuable Player and Saskatchewan's #1 Quarterback, had been traded to the Toronto Argonauts.

The Wizard couldn't believe what he heard! How could we lose such a valuable player? GM Eric Tillman says it is all about money and that they would be $16K over the salary cap by keeping Joesph. They said that we would have to lose 2 other players to make Kerry affordable. What price can you put on success? I mean, under Joseph, the Riders won their 3rd Grey Cup in history.

Joseph completed 267-of-459 passes for 4,0002 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season.

"This decision was very tough and emotional," said general manager Eric Argo - Kerry JosephTillman. "But, in the end, we felt trading Kerry to a team which was willing to satisfy his contractual expectations was the right thing to do.

Let's hope that Tillman doesn't choose to make anymore "good trades" like the one announced. I mean he's changing a winning combination and it looks like the poor Riders will be startin' from scratch.

Sucks to be green at the moment... but time will tell if Tillman has the know how to manage our team and keep the winning momentum going.

WHAT IS A 710 ?

A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in and asked for a seven-hundred-ten.

We all looked at each other and another customer asked, 'What is a seven-hundred-ten?'

She replied, 'You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one..'

She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.

The mechanic gave her a piece of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.

She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710. He then took her over to another car which had its hood up and asked 'is there a 710 on this car?'

She pointed and said, 'Of course, its right there.'

If you're not sure what a 710 is click here.

Starbucks Anonymous

Starbucks Logo
Hello, my name is Betrayer of Independent Coffee Shops Everywhere and yes, I am a Starbucks-aholic.

My conversion to the dark side did not happen overnight. No, the evil force that is Starbucks snuck up on me gradually – almost innocently. Now, however, this dark pit of corporate pseudo-culture has wrapped itself firmly around my existence like the mind-numbingly horrible disease that it is.

To be fair, I don’t think Starbucks means to be evil. It just is. Or maybe Starbucks itself is not evil. Maybe it is Starbucks customers that are the actual dark force responsible for the death of independent coffeehouses (and coffee house culture) across the nation.

Maybe you agree, maybe you do not – but you are probably wandering what the hell all this has to do with a ‘gay’ post? Let me ‘splain, no, no, is too much, let me sum up.

Starbucks is shiny, glowing example of how complacency is warping our country into a moronic assembly of sheep. Not only sheep, but sheep who walk humbly forward to offer themselves as fuzzy coats and tasty lamb chops with mint sauce. Okay, so maybe the metaphor is a bit thick. Simply put, the people who line up to wait for skinny, half-caf, venti, one Splenda mochas at Starbucks are the same people who let George Bush win the presidency and think protesting the war in Iraq is ‘un-American’ – or at least pretty pointless.

Those clueless toadies who let themselves be abused by baristas in aprons are the same folk who sneer at the poor, insult the less-educated and smile at gay people while declaring them comparable to pedophiles. Or, at the least, they don’t care enough about the poor, less-educated or minority populations to actually do anything about making their lives better.

Starbucks is the anti-Christ of coffee culture. The entire purpose of Starbucks is to move in, drive out any local competition and become the sole coffee god of whatever neighborhood they have taken over. Look at Vancouver. Sadly, they are very good at it. Primarily because Starbucks is an over-inflated corporation with tons of ready capital. However, the second largest reason they can take over, drive indie coffee shops out of business and destroy all vestige of local coffee culture is us – the customer.

Thank goodness when in downtown Saskatoon, We would rather than drive the half-mile down the road to the eclectic Broadway Roastery with eclectic pictures decorating the walls than walk to the nearest corner Starbucks . We would rather be served by the good, clean-cut ‘pretty’ Canadian employees of the Roastery and exchange words with the slightly crazed-looking punk boy with purple hair and a pierced lip.

Mostly, we would rather that our visits to coffee shops be different from everything else – interesting enough to warrant an appearance to pick up your daily caffeine, meet someone new, form an opinion or even step outside of our daily routine for a single second.

Indie coffee shops are places that you go to experience life – even if it is just to sit in a corner and read, write or people-watch. Starbucks shops are dead worlds where you go to work on a ‘business proposal,’ write your term paper or talk about shopping with a group of people who look so much like you that you’d think you’d walked into a cloning lab.

Unfortunately, that seems to be what people want. They want conformity, sameness – the boring old routine every day. People want a comfortable, non-threatening universe where nothing changes except the daily coffee choices (and those not often). They don’t want adventure; they don’t want challenge. Increasingly, our country is becoming more and more a reflection of this attitude.

We don’t challenge our government. Hell, a great majority don’t even know exactly what their government is doing that they should be challenging. Scary people want to ban gays from having equal rights because they don’t think a new flavor should be added to the menu. Things that are different are evil! How many people at Starbucks have ever tried a kiwi fizz cream soda? Not many I’d bet, but I remember an indie coffee shop where people just couldn’t get enough of them. How many conservative right-wingers have ever actually tried to educate themselves about gays? About as few as have tried a kiwi soda I’m betting.

Starbucks is not, in itself, evil – I think. Sadly, I think it is myself – and the many hundreds like me that are the real problem. If I had the cash, I'd go to Starbucks almost daily. Starbucks is about 10 blocks from my apartment. When I have a mocha craving, and I am downtown, it is the easiest thing in the world just to walk over and have a nice, perfectly pretty blond barista serve one up for me. To visit the nearest indie shop would require an extra set of steps, and getting fit in the process and paying more money for a probably pricier, culturally-responsible, small-business-supporting hot chocolate coffee drink. Not to mention, I live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The number of indie coffee shops in this city are more visible than the number of gay people you see holding hands downtown – and that part at least is good. That's why we have to try to ignore that Starbucks sign.

So, like all the people who vote for candidates who they’ve seen the most number of times in television commercials – I give the Starbucks my patronage over and over again. It is quick, it is easy and it requires no involvement of my brain whatsoever. It’s very American, but I'm Canadian, eh?

Wry Humour

A postman, on his route, picked up a letter from a mailbox that was addressed to God. The postman seeing that the letter was not sealed, and there being no postage on it, opened and read it.

It was from a man who was down on his luck and was asking God for help. The letter asked for $50 to get his family through the next week. The postman, being a Mason, took the letter to Lodge that evening, read it, and asked for donations for the unfortunate fellow. The Masons, wanting to help, took up a collection, and received twenty five dollars from the brethren. The Secretary placed the cash in a Lodge envelope, and gave it to the postman to deliver the following day, which he did.

Another day passed, and the postman again found an unsealed letter in the mailbox addressed to God. Again he opened and read the letter, which thanked God for the money, but instructed him to send it through the Knights of Columbus next time as the Masons kept half.

Two Little Old Ladies

Two little old ladies had been very long-time close friends. But being old-fashioned, each went to a retirement home of her own respective religion.

It was not long before Mrs. Murphy felt very lonesome for Mrs. Cohen, so one day she asked to be driven to the Jewish Home to visit her old friend.

When she arrived she was greeted with open arms, hugs, and kisses. Mrs. Murphy said "Don't be holdin' back, Mrs. Cohen, how do you like it here?"

Mrs. Cohen went on and on about the wonderful food, the facility and the care takers. Then, with a twinkle in her eye, she said, "But the best thing is that I now have a boyfriend."

Mrs. Murphy said, "Now isn't that wonderful! Tell me all about it."

Mrs. Cohen said, "After lunch we go up to my room and sit on the edge of the bed. I let him touch me on the top, and then on the bottom, and then we sing Jewish songs."

Mrs. Murphy said, "For sure it's a blessing. I'm so glad for you Mrs. Cohen."
Mrs. Cohen said, "And how is it with you, Mrs. Murphy?"

Mrs. Murphy said it was also wonderful at her new facility, and that she also had a boyfriend.

Mrs. Cohen said, "Good for you! So what do you do?"

"We also go up to my room after lunch and sit on the edge of the bed. I let him touch me on top, and then I let him touch me down below."

Mrs. Cohen said, "Yes? And then....?"

Mrs. Murphy said, "Well, since we don't know any Jewish songs, we have sex.

"Hot Chocolate"

Hot ChocolateA group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to go visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives. Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and an assortment of cups - porcelain, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.

When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said:
"Notice that all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you're drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups...

And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate God has provided us. God makes the hot chocolate, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly...

And enjoy your hot chocolate.

Queers In Space

Star Trek - Hidden Frontier

Star Trek Hidden Frontier
You're about to embark on an epic journey into the world of Trek -- a world you've never experienced before like this.

A story that promises to not only entertain, but to bring tears to your eyes and pride to your heart.

Join us in changing the face of Trek fanfilms.

<< From their website: Hidden Frontier is set after the Dominion War featured in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

When Rob Caves, Executive Producer created Hidden Frontier, he wanted to combine the best elements of the Next Generation era Trek shows he grew up with. On Hidden Frontier, we have a space station, Deep Space Twelve, as well as a starship, the Galaxy Class U.S.S. Excelsior, NCC-77246. This allows us to explore the Star Trek universe in just about any way our writers can imagine.

It's important to remember that Hidden Frontier is produced on no budget so instead of building fancy sets, piling on effects, and shooting in exotic locations, we've decided to focus on what we can improve. That means our stories became more character driven as the show evolved. After all, that's what Star Trek is really about. The people, and the human condition. Once the writing improved, we started to tackle areas like costuming and makeup.

Hidden Frontier tries to boldly follow what has come before while exploring new issues Star Trek has not yet tackled. The inclusion of a gay male character in season 2's "Encke" was yet another bold step forward for Star Trek. In the very same season we produced, "Cowards Death", a story that explored the realities of living with clinical depression. And later in season five "Security Counsel" explored a planet where the government was allowed to slowly chip away at its people's freedoms in an eerie commentary on our troubled times. We hope you find our stories captivating and original, true to the spirit of Trek, and we hope you have as much fun watching the show as we did making it! >>

Gene Roddenberry would be proud of the Diversity shown in Hidden Frontier... something he always dreamed of but sadly died before they could come to fruition. I suggest watching a couple from Season 6, as it really shows how far the new crew has gone in the development of this series. Then start at the beginning at Season 1.

My favourite quote is when an ensign asks Captain Shelby what Roe Nevin ‘sees’ in a Klingon.., and she replies “Ridges.. it’s about ridges!” And the fact that the young Roe Nevin is in and out of the closet, with whom Cory Aster is in love with. Not being able to have a stable relationship with Nevin, Cory Aster goes on to explore a relationship with Jorian, a Trill that ends up getting joined, thus causing distress to Aster. You will have to watch the series to see how it turns out. I am not one to include too many spoilers – but the shows are well worth watching.

All movies are downloadable for free and use the .mov (Quicktime) format from the site:
http://www.hiddenfrontier.org/episodes/index.php
There are 7 or 8 (1/2 hour) episodes per season. And the series finale of season 7 is also now available. All are available in Hi-Res or Low Res.

--Wizard's Note: Watch their continuing adventures in Star Trek: Odyssey and Star Trek - The Helena Chronicles" also available at Hidden Frontier!

A Journal...

Day 752 - My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

Day 761 - Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

Day 762 - Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep deprivation, incessant pleas for food at all hours of the night.

Day 767 - Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

Day 768 - I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time, however, it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid? My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

Day 771 - There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer." More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

Day 774 - I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and may be snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant. He has mastered their frightful tongue, something akin to mole speak, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal, room his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time...Winking Kitty

Brian was dating Lorraine and they were very close. While they were dating he met another woman named Clearly and wanted to start dating her but felt that he should be faithful to Lorraine. So he continued to date Lorraine. One day Brian took Lorraine on a walk in the woods by the river. As they were walking near the river Lorraine fell in and was washed away. Brian softly sang, "I can see Clearly now, Lorraine has gone..."

A cop pulls a young guy over:
"Hello officer" said the smart aleck kid.
"Young man did you see that stop sign?" asked the cop.
Yup, but I didn't see you!

Q: How many politicians does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Two. One to assure the public that everything possible is being done while the other screws it into a water faucet.

Liger
On a typical day he will devour
200 lb of meat, usually beef or
chicken, and is capable of eating
100 lb at a single setting. At just
three years old, Hercules already
weighs half a ton.

Liger

He is the unintentional result of
two enormous big cats living close
together at the Institute of Greatly
Endangered and Rare Species, in
Miami , Florida , and already dwarfs
both his parents.

Liger

'Ligers are not something
we planned on having,' said
institute owner Dr Bhagavan Antle.
'We have lions and tigers living
together in large enclosures and
at first we had no idea how well
one of the lion boys was getting
along with a tiger girl, then lo
and behold we had a liger.'
These two cats don't normally
have the opportunity to breed
in the wild, as most lions live
in Africa and most tigers in Asia.

Liger

50mph runner... Not only that, but
he likes to swim, a feat unheard of
among water-fearing lions. In the
wild it is virtually impossible for lions
and tigers to mate Not only are they
enemies likely to kill one another.
But incredible though he is, Hercules
is not unique. Ligers have been bred
in captivity, deliberately and
accidentally, since shortly
before World War II.

Liger

Today there are believed to be a
handful of ligers around the world
and a similar number of tigons,
the product of a tiger father and
lion mother. Tigons are smaller
than ligers and take on more
physical characteristics of
the tiger.

The Perils of Aging While Gay

by Tomas Guerra, special to 365gay.com

Growing Old GayWhen Gayle had a stroke one Sunday evening nine years ago, she was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center's emergency room, Minnesota's third largest hospital.

But when Gayle (a senior trans woman) got there, she was told that in order to receive treatment, she would have to re-assume her old identity: She had to become Glen if she wanted to be helped.

Gayle did not protest. She wanted her life to be saved. But when she was taken to the Veterans Administration Hospital for follow-up care, she was forced to do the same: she was told she'd be Glen for every medical provider who worked there.

More recently, an openly gay man who had no family or friends hanged himself in a room of a nursing home in an East Coast city; because others on his floor were made uncomfortable by his sexual orientation, the 79-year-old had been moved to a floor for patients with disabilities and dementia. The resulting stress made him too depressed to live.

As the elderly population swells—it is expected to double from 44 million to 90 million in the next 25 years—abuses like these and the general lack of humane care for LGBT elders are becoming more and more visible.

According to statistics from SAGE (Service and Advocacy for GLBT Elders), the senior LGBT population will multiply from 3 million to 6 or 7 million in the next 25 years, and their communities are not prepared to give them proper housing and the appropriate healthcare. Researchers and activists see a crisis looming.

"The number of seniors could become a kind of crisis like the HIV epidemic in the next five to 10 years, and there is no structure to deal with it. They're not ready for us," said Amber Hollibaugh, senior strategist for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

In Milwaukee County, the Department of Aging found that the city's LGBT seniors were five times less likely than other elders to access needed services because of fear of discrimination.

Michael Adams, executive director of SAGE, added that because Social Security survivor benefits and Medicaid are built around marriage, there is also latent discrimination at the federal level which heavily impacts older same-sex couples.

Adams said that in addition to discrimination, the growing LGBT senior population faces more challenges because it doesn't have the same support network as most other seniors: "Eighty percent of the community we work with (in New York) doesn't have children, and 50 percent have no family members to reach in case of an emergency."

But the landscape is starting to change for the elderly, and as they live longer and grow in numbers, and as post-Stonewall baby boomers start their retired lives, there is emerging a new generation less afraid to speak out for their rights and ready to challenge the status quo in the retirement community.

The survey "Gay and Graying: Concerns for the Future," just released by Community Marketing Inc., found 70 percent of its lesbian and gay respondents over age 40 with concerns about losing the ability to care for themselves. And the majority also feared becoming sick or disabled.

So how will society, the federal government, healthcare providers and nursing homes adjust to their urgent needs?

The federal government has begun making some improvements for LGBT seniors. The Bush administration, for example, admitted SAGE as the first LGBT delegate to the White House Conference on Aging in 2005.

Also, for the first time ever, AARP will sponsor and present SAGE's National Conference on Aging "It's about Time: LGBT Aging in a Changing World," to be held next October in New York.

LGBT aging projects are also branching out in cities such as Boston, New York, Chicago and Atlanta. And Stonewall Communities, a non-profit organization from Boston, has partnered with Abbott Real Estate to build "Stonewall Audubon Circle," 53 one- and two-bedroom homes which feature assisted-living centers for older gay people, the first of its kind.

But help needs to come from within the LGBT community as well. Hollibaugh, who authored the first LGBT training curriculum for nursing homes, emphasized that to overcome these challenges, it is vital to build a bridge between LGBT elders and younger generation, because this sort of discrimination is likely to continue, and younger activists need to help.

"The bulk of us are not rich, and if the community doesn't respond, we will be without choice," she said.

Nine years after her tragedy Gayle is still crippled, but she has managed to recover enough to live independently in a suburb near Minneapolis.

When Gayle and her friends talk about her experience with the medical personnel at the county and VA hospitals, she feels sad and angry.

And when they ask her, "Why didn't you protest?" she simply responds: "I didn't have any choices. When you're not sure if you're going to live or die, you're just going to do what they tell you to do."

"Make it so!" - The Star Trek Apartment

You know, we all say we'd like to have our own transporter rooms, but so few of us ever bother to make one. Interior design genius Tony Alleyne (www.24thcid.com) owes a tremendous debt to "Star Trek: The Next Generation," not only for inspiring his insanely wonderful apartment, but also for generating enough mainstream acceptance of the franchise to entice non Betazoid women through the door.

Alleyne used Vellman digital audio playback modules to provide authentic ST sound effects, plus Vossystems voice-activation gear and loads of AEI Security Systems remote controls. No word on whether he hires a flunky in a red shirt to stage spark-showered deaths at parties. Located in the neutral zone of Hincley, Leicestershire in the UK, Alleyne recently posted a stellar $1 million USD asking price for his unearthly domicile on eBay. Say, wasn't money supposed to disappear by the 24th century?

The Force

Jedi Knight

Sometimes when I am sitting in my car at a stoplight, I imagine myself as a Jedi Knight.

I close my eyes and concentrate on the Force.

Sometimes, I have to concentrate longer than others, but I know it works.

The light turns green, doesn’t it?

Today's Smile

Happy FaceArnold and his wife were cleaning out the attic one day when he came across a ticket from the local shoe repair shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed that it was over eleven years old. They both laughed and tried to remember which of them might have forgotten to pick up a pair of shoes over a decade ago.
"Do you think the shoes will still be in the shop?" Arnold asked.

"Not very likely," his wife said.

"It's worth a try," Arnold said, pocketing the ticket. He went downstairs, hopped into the car, and drove to the store. With a straight face, he handed the ticket to the man behind the counter. With a face just as straight, the man said, "Just a minute. I'll have to look for these."

He disappeared into a dark corner at the back of the shop. Two minutes later, the man called out, "Here they are!"

"No kidding?" Arnold called back. "That's terrific! Who would have thought they'd still be here after all this time."

The man came back to the counter, empty-handed. "They'll be ready Thursday."
