FYI - Champion Pillow Fighting

pillow fighting

FYIBelieve it or not, championship pillow fighting is a real organized combat sport! 😄🛏️🥊

The best-known organization is the Pillow Fight Championship (PFC), founded in Florida by brothers Steve and Paul Williams in 2021. The idea was to take the basic childhood pillow fight and turn it into a structured competitive sport with trained athletes, referees, scoring and championship belts.

The fighters don't use ordinary bedroom pillows. PFC developed specialized combat pillows weighing roughly 2 pounds (about 0.9 kg). They're foam-filled, have durable coverings and handles/straps that allow fighters to swing them rapidly.

A bout is surprisingly intense. Fighters generally compete for 90 seconds, and they're expected to keep moving rather than simply stand in one place. They can strike only with the pillow—punching, kicking, charging and grabbing the opponent's pillow aren't allowed.

The scoring system is pretty unusual:

  • Head strike: 1 point
  • Unbalancing an opponent with a leg strike: 1 point
  • Showmanship: 1 point
  • 360-degree head strike: 3 points
  • Breaking the pillow: 3 points
  • Knocking an opponent down: 5 points

Three judges score the action, and a tied match can go to a short tiebreaker.

The sport's first pay-per-view championship event, Pound Down, was held in Miami on January 29, 2022. It featured 16 men and 8 women. Hauley Tillman won the men's tournament, while Brazilian MMA fighter Istela Nunes won the women's tournament. Guinness World Records recognized the event as the first pay-per-view pillow fight.

And it isn't just a one-off novelty anymore. PFC says its events have appeared on ESPN8: The Ocho, and the organization currently lists events and leagues in several countries.

What's particularly funny is that the sport actually requires many of the same skills as conventional combat sports: footwork, timing, distance management, reaction speed, dodging and stamina. The difference is that instead of getting punched in the face, your opponent is trying to whack you with a giant padded cushion! 😂

There have even been international versions of competitive pillow fighting, including organized competitions in Ghana, where the activity has been incorporated into community and school sporting programmes.

So yes—somewhere in the world right now, there are people who can legitimately say:

"I'm a professional pillow fighter." 😆
