"The queen died peacefully at Balmoral [in Scotland] this afternoon at age 96. The king and the queen consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow," reads the statement from Buckingham Palace that is posted on its gates, referring to King Charles and his wife, Camilla.
"The death of Her Majesty the Queen is a huge loss for the nation," UK Prime Minister Liz Truss said during a news conference outside 10 Downing Street, calling her "the rock on which modern Britain was built on."
Truss met with Queen Elizabeth at her castle in Scotland only two days ago, when she formally accepted the prime minister's job.
People began gathering outside Buckingham Palace, laying flowers where an official proclamation of her death was posted. Crowds took to the streets of London, with some singing "God Save the Queen" in tribute as the news filtered out.
Her eldest son and heir, King Charles III, 73, immediately became king upon her death.
"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," the statement reads. "We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.
The Wizard's Note: I will certainly miss Queen Elizabeth II. She was beloved by me. I am very sad at the loss of The Queen -- the whole World has lost an amazing person and leader.
God save The Queen!
