Words from TV

COWABUNGA: Originally spelled “kawabonga,” the word is an expression of approval invented by TV writer Edward Kean and first uttered in the late 1940s by Chief Thunderthud, a character on The Howdy Doody Show. It also appeared in a 1965 Peanuts special, but it was used most notably by Michelangelo of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bart Simpson of The Simpsons.

FRAK: Originally spelled “frack” when it was used on the 30th-century-set Battlestar Galactica in 1978, it was altered to “frak” for the 2003 revival of the show. It’s since made its way into common usage as a substitute swear word.
