Dear Love Doctor,
I am a rent boy* and I have a fair number of clients, new and returning. I am 19 and make pretty good money at what I do. I have this one regular though who pays me double what I ask, and I service him every week. Last night after sex, he said that he didn’t like me getting paid for sex and was worried I will get AIDS by having so many sexual partners. (I take precautions for full on sex). He then said that he wanted to be my boyfriend, and that he would take care of me so I could give up prostitution. Wow! Was I ever surprised to hear that. I am 19 and he is over 40. I like him and all, but truthfully, I find being a rent boy rather exciting. I mean sex multiple times a night with a wide variety of partners. I mean, what’s not to love. I am considering his offer though. But I’m hemming and hawing over it. Advice, doctor?
Signed,
Give it all up?

Dear up,
Being a boyfriend goes both ways. This man may have come to love you, I mean he knows the real you, and yet he wants a relationship! BUT.... you don’t love him. Relationships like that are hard to maintain. It’s always possible that you may grow to love him, but... that is an if, not a when. While its very true that the longer you engage as a prostitute, the more likely you will get HIV, getting it is not certain. You say you practice safe sex, but did you know you CAN get HIV from oral sex? Cuts/abrasions in your mouth is enough for semen to get into your bloodstream. What makes it more likely is that the vast majority of you clientele are married (some with kids). They are unlikely to get tested for HIV so....
But going forward. I don’t recommend being his ‘boyfriend’ yet. Tell him that you want to get to know him, date him, then you will have enough information to make a decision. Good luck and Safe Sex!
Hope this helps,
The Love Doctor
