Ellen saddened by gay marriage ban

Ellen and PortiaEllen DeGeneres, who married same-sex partner Portia de Rossi in August, says she is “saddened beyond belief” that Proposition 8 has been passed, banning gay marriage in California. In a statement Wednesday to The Associated Press, the talk show host said that she, “like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality” by electing Barack Obama as president. But with the passage of California’s Proposition 8, “we took a giant step away.” DeGeneres had contributed $100,000 to fight the amendment, but says she will “continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”

Some comments:

Angelfire on November 7, 2008 I’m sorry, but who cares who marries who. If a same sex couple wants to get married let them. They aren’t hurting anyone else, what two adults do behind closed doors is there business and no one else’s. I totally agree that by letting Prop 8 pass is a step back for equality in the states.

Sonny on November 7, 2008 The government giveth the government taketh away. You can always come to Canada.

Judy on November 7, 2008 I also think it is no one elses business, the government has no right to tell anywone who they can marry!

quinn on November 7, 2008 As long as we don’t keep silent, and keep speaking out things will change. If not today tomorrow. We will all be treated equal.

john on November 7, 2008 Marriage is a sacred institution between one man and one woman. I am completely for a gay couple to have rights as anyone else. However, the government has no say in the marriage arena period. Marriage is a sacrament of the church, not the state. If a gay couple want to be together, that’s their business, just don’t try and take away from the Church to sanctify your belief. That is our rights as christians to uphold the sanctity of marriage.

Dogmeat on November 7, 2008 Why does it always have to be a Christian thing? Marriage is sacred across many religions and what you Christians deny your followers should not have to be upheld for other religions. That’s why governments’ are involved, as mediators for all peoples.

Get off the high horse and let people do what people want to do, as long as they want to be left alone, why mess with them?

Marriage is not nice, its not a way to "be happy", or play nice, a way to get laid every night (hah!) or even to be a good christian, Jew or Buddist. Its a contract, social in nature and very legal, which is designed to limit the freedoms of the people who have signed on to it. Failure to abide by this contract can and will result in severe financial penalties and likely serious emotional trauma to dependants. The law cannot force people to have a stable home life, or keep them from straying outside of the bounds of holy matrimony, but it CAN make it damned difficult to trade in your 40 year old wife for two twenty year olds. And thats pretty much all we can expect from a legal contract such as this.
This is the uncomfortable truth. Why anyone thinks this is a desirable thing has probably got kids to think about. Otherwise the tax breaks don't even come close to being worth the cost of the divorce.
Listen to me...I sound like I am opposed to marriage as an institution, no matter what mix the genders involved are. And I am opposed in nine out of ten cases of couples I meet. Besides, there are many reasons for limiting one's freedoms. You should see how much kids will limit your freedoms! Both myself and the world are much happier that I have limited my freedom to break into your house for instance. But that is what Marriage actually is...a difficult to abide by contract to keep your pants zipped outside the bedroom and to raise kids.
All else is fluff.
