Michael Bublé - in concert - Saskatoon

In a word - Outstanding!

Last night I was given the great gift of music and a wonderful evening with Michael Bublé. It was a Christmas present from my partner. What a gift! What a show!

Michael's show actually opened with another group - Naturally 7 - Naturally 7 gained worldwide attention last year, after a video of them "busking" on a Paris subway car was uploaded and viewed millions of times. In the below video, you can listen to their rendition of Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight as bewildered passengers look on. I remember being blown away the first time I saw it: they seemed too good to be buskers (not that buskers can't be good -- you know what I mean.)

Well, they weren't. In fact, this gospel/a cappella/hip-hop/soul troupe has already released four albums, though most of their success has been in Europe. And the subway "busking?" Their label told them to do it. Ah, well.

Naturally 7 are currently on a cross-Canada tour -- or Kanada as their website calls it -- opening for crooner Michael Bublé, already played Edmonton, Saskatoon, with upcoming dates in Winnipeg, Sudbury, Toronto, Ottawa, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Montreal, Halifax, and Moncton.

And, for comparison's sake, here's the actual music video. What's the lesson in all of this? Kids, if you want to be famous, start singing on buses and subways.

They were so polished and the vocal play (Using their voices to mimic instruments) has to be heard to be believed.

This was the first concert that I have ever been to where the opening act got a standing ovation from the crowd!

Check out their website here.

Now.. on to Bublé:

Michael BubléThe show started with "Me and Mrs. Jones" which he pulled off magnificently. Michael Bublé is an extremely talented singer who has the moxy to defend the style of music he plays and is very comfortable talking with the fans while on stage. He managed to make the show last night (9000+ fans), into a very personal thing. That is, It felt to me to be a more intimate show than a concert - I was mesmerized by his voice, and of course he certainly isn't hard on the eyes to look at!

Bublé has a sense of humour as well, what with "Fever" (finger snaps heard thru out the audience), Michael said ("so ya know this one" - during the snaps - and to everyone's suprise, he started singing:

" Oh! The good old hockey game,
Is the best game you can name;
and the audience laughed and finished the song with:
And the best game you can name,
Is the good old Hockey game!
"

and Michael went directly into "Fever". Another example of this was when Bublé addresses the men in the audience who were not thrilled to be there, (escorting the wife), and got them all worked up about making the show more manly and after pumping up the testosterone levels - Bublé started belting out Y.M.C.A - what a hoot! Have you ever seen close to 9000 people doing Y.M.C.A?

Bublé was a showman the whole evening, demonstrating that he could control the audience through out the show. From the old classic "Fever" to songs from his new album, " Call Me Irresponsible", with the song "Lost", Bublé had the fans around his finger.

All in all - a great concert with a double slam - a GREAT opening act with "Naturally 7" and ending with "Old 'New' Blue-eyes Bublé" - an evening I won't soon forget.

My thanks to my partner for the gift of the tickets for Christmas!
