Ukrainian Style Macaroni and Cheese

Mac and Cheese w/ sauerkraut

The Wizard's Ukrainian-style macaroni and cheese, known as "makarony z syrom" in Ukrainian, is a delicious and comforting dish that is simple to make. Here is a recipe that you can use to make Ukrainian-style macaroni and cheese:

Ingredients:

  • 500g elbow macaroni
  • 1 jar of wine sauerkraut  (drained but not rinsed)
  • 3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Cook the macaroni according to the package directions until it's al dente. Drain and set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the cooked macaroni with the sauerkraut, the shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.

  4. Transfer the macaroni mixture into a greased baking dish.

  5. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the macaroni mixture.

  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Your Ukrainian-style macaroni and cheese is now ready to serve! Enjoy it as a comforting and delicious side dish or main course. Note: you can substitute Kraft Dinner for the macaroni - use 2 boxes and simply add the jar of sauerkraut to the finished KD (In a pinch - but the whole recipe tastes even better!)

I was surprised to read sauerkraut is an ingredient. What size jar of wine sauerkraut is needed for the recipe?
