Seen One Of These????

Seen one of these signs?

Here is one from Winnipeg Manitoba - aptly named "Confusion Corner"...

Confusion Corner Winnipeg Manitoba Canada

The History of 'APRONS'

The Apron

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for
Removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

Send this to those who would know (and love) the story about Grandma's aprons.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.

Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

Tetanus Shot

An old man in his mid-eighties struggles to get up from the couch then starts putting on his coat. His wife, seeing the unexpected behavior, asks, "Where are you going?"

He replies, "I'm going to the doctor."

She says, "Why, are you sick?"

He says, "Nope, I'm going to get me some of that Viagra stuff."

Immediately the wife starts working and positioning herself to get out of her rocker and begins to put on her coat.

He says, "Where the heck are you going"?

She answers, "I'm going to the doctor, too."

He says, "Why, what do you need?"

She says, "If you're going to start using that rusty old thing, I'm getting a Tetanus shot."

Punny!! Very Punny!!!!

A man tried to phone the King of the Jungle.

All he got was a recorded message saying, "All the lions are busy right now. Please try later."

WOO-HOO!

A man is driving down a country road, when he spots a farmer standing in the middle of a huge field of grass. He pulls the car over to the side of the road and notices that the farmer is just standing there, doing nothing, looking at nothing.

The man gets out of the car, walks all the way out to the farmer and asks him, "Ah excuse me mister, but what are you doing?"

The farmer replies, "I'm trying to win a Nobel Prize."

"How?" asks the man, puzzled.

"Well I heard they give the Nobel Prize to people who are out standing in their field."

WOO-HOO!

Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks.
They charged one and let the other one off.

WOO-HOO!

Two tall trees are growing in the woods. A small tree begins to grow between them. One tree says to the other, "Is that a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"

The other says he cannot tell. Just then a woodpecker lands in the sapling. The tall tree says, "Woodpecker, you are a tree expert. Can you tell if that is a son of a beech or a son of a birch?"

The woodpecker takes a taste of the small tree. He replies, "It is neither a son of a beech nor a son of a birch. That, my friends, is the best piece of ash I have ever put my pecker in."

Woke Up This Morning*

You woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun,
Your mama always said you'd be
The Chosen One.

She said: You're one in a million
You've got to burn to shine,
But you were born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

When you woke up this morning
All that love had gone,
Your Papa never told you
About right and wrong.

But you're, but you're looking good, baby,
I believe that you're feeling fine, (shame about it),
Born under a bad sign
With a blue moon in your eyes.

Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
Woke up this morning

You woke up this morning
The world turned upside down,
Lord above, thing's ain't been the same
Since the Blues walked in our town.

Baby, but you're, but you're one in a million
You've got that shotgun shine; shame about it,
Born under a bad sign,
With a blue moon in your eyes.

Woke up this morning
Woke up this morning
Got a blue moon in your eyes
Woke up this morning

When you woke up this morning everything was gone.
By half past ten your head was going ding-dong.
Ringing like a bell from your head down to your toes,
Like a voice telling you there was something you should know.
Last night you were flying but today you're so low
Ain't it times like these that you wonder if you'll ever know
The meaning of things as they appear to the others:
Wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers.
Don't you wish you didn't function,
Don't you wish you didn't think
Beyond the next paycheck and the next little drink'
Well you do so make up your mind to go on,'cos
When you woke up this morning everything you had was gone.

Woke up this morning
Woke up this morning
Woke up this morning
You wanna be the Chosen One.

Woke up this morning
Woke up this morning
Woke up this morning
Got yourself a gun.
Got yourself a gun.
Got yourself a gun.

Age Prevails

A wealthy old lady decides to go on a photo safari in Africa taking her faithful aged poodle named Cuddles, along for the company.

One day the poodle starts chasing butterflies and before long, Cuddles discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old poodle thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!" Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap the old poodle exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. "Whew!", says the leopard, "That was close! That old poodle nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So off he goes, but the old poodle sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up. The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old poodle sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?", but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old poodle says.

"Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!

Moral of this story....

Missing and Murdered Indiginous Women

It can happen to anyone, and it can happen anywhere..... long post & trigger warnings

While in Vegas, on one of our last couple days left. Me & Kevin were getting into the elevator.

When the elevator opened, we noticed there was three people in there. Two males and a young looking girl. When we got in, I smiled and stood silently as the elevator door closed. I found it a little odd both men were standing so close to her one on each side, sandwiching her in. So I glanced over, I smiled and made eye contact at the young girl & she then looked straight into my eyes and mouthed “help me” with her eyes glossy & extremely widened.

At that very moment, my heart started racing, as was my mind. (OMG)

I nudged Kevin and I looked at him with my eyes huge and gave him the “look over there look”. We both looked over and she mouthed again “help me”...

Now both looking over at them, both guys smiled at us and were saying hi, hey ... trying to act all friendly & nonchalant.

I knew I had to act quick and at the same time keep our own selves as safe as possible. With my heart legit pounding out of my chest, I took a deep breath & I immediately did a double glance and stated excitedly “hey girl is that you? ... OMG how are you ... when did you get here ... And she quickly followed suite & went along with it ...

I went on talking about how’s it’s been awhile since I seen her and asked how her mom was doing ... and as the elevator door opened my heart literally starting sinking I then reached out and grabbed her arm excitedly saying how we needed to catch up & go downstairs and have drinks etc. She smiled and grabbed on to me tightly as they started pulling at her to move out of elevator. At this moment I hugged her and we just stared at each other ... Kevin then put out his arm in front of them blocking them from leaving & said “no she’s coming with us downstairs” They stood there for a split second stared at each other then at us again & walked out of the elevator. I just kept talking, excitedly talking out loud to her & as the elevator door closed she started crying and immediately started to drop to the ground. I just held her and kept reassuring her she was safe. She started crying saying they wouldn’t let her leave, she explained one minute they were having drinks next thing she knew she was in elevator and that wouldn’t let her go. She couldn’t remember anything else.

Internally, I kept telling myself to breath to stay calm while stating out loud for her to breath, and reiterating that she was safe now!

I asked her if she was staying here at the hotel she stated “I’m at the MGM where am I”? I stated we were not at the MGM.

It seemed like forever, the elevator was taking to get downstairs, I just kept talking, asking questions, reassuring but trying not to overwhelm her. As the door finally opened and we hit the main floor, we walked out of elevator & I asked where she was visiting Vegas from, she stated Alaska ❤️

We immediately went to the security station and told them what happened. There was probably around 8-9 of them standing around as we explained what just happened.

They pulled her aside and I spoke with a couple of them asking what the process was and if police would and should be called.

One actually had the audacity to say this girl “sure looked comfortable with them earlier in the night” & another security guard nonchalantly stated “well this is Vegas” ... AYFKM??? ... *let me just say they ALL got an earful from me about these disgusting comments and it wasn’t a pretty scene... Sorry not sorry!

At the end of it all, they reassured us that they would take good care of her and I asked her if she felt OK for us to leave her with them. She nodded & hugged us again, wiping away her tears, thanking us.

We said our goodbyes, she smiled ✨

We walked away, both still visibly shaken up and now with an even more heightened vigilance and sense of awareness. We walked in a circle of the hotel casino both trying to comprehend what had just literally happened...

We continued to walk around looking for our friends, as we continued on our way at one particular point we noticed a man on his phone texting as he looked straight at us. He stared hard, then turned away and looked back a couple times. We both found this very odd ...

We meet up with “Kyle, the security guard” he stated they were investigating this situation as there was something more going on but couldn’t say what .. he then looked us straight in the eyes, without turning his head and stated the guys were now sitting at bar by the elevator watching us.

Nonchalantly, I turned to look over and there they were staring hard in our direction.

When we were done talking, we walked away knowing they were watching our every move.. Now what ? Let’s just keep calm and walk.

As we walked, one of the guys starts running towards us. I stopped and turned around as he approached us. He then looked stone cold right at me and asked if I had a “light” I stared right back and said NO. He then looked over and asked Kevin the exact same thing and Kevin told him no and waved him out of our way. He smirked and walked slowly away. We knew security/police/someone was investigating this and for our safety we needed to try stay as calm as we could and just handle this as best we can because at this point we knew that whatever was going on was so much more bigger then us trying to handle it on our own.

Now making our way back to room, we meet up with Kyle again who stated he seen them watching us and seen the one approach us.

He then stated, that he could not technically tell us what to do but suggested to speak to security if we felt “uncomfortable” (which at this point was truly an understatement) they (security) would then be able to act on our complaints...

I then asked Kyle “what happened to the young lady” where did they take her and he stated she was good and was sent back to her hotel in an Uber......hearing this, I wasn’t sure how to feel or react. All I could do, was say a silent prayer, say her name and pray that she made it safety back to her hotel and eventually safe back home to Alaska. ✨ lastly, upon check out, when I shared this situation with management she was not even aware this had occurred ... she was actually shocked it happened in “this hotel”...

This experience will forever be etched in my mind, I still see her face and the fear she wore in that very moment. But I keep close, the fact and purpose of us being the ones chosen to have our paths crossed with hers. ❤️

I’ve allowed myself the time to process this & from sharing this with some. I know one thing that’s for sure ... This story needs to be shared to more, it needs to be told. Not only to continue to spread awareness but because sex trafficking is REAL, it’s a billion dollar industry that doesn’t just happen in the movies or in foreign countries but right in our own backyards and it’s happening to our women, men, & children.

Please educate your loved ones, be aware of your surroundings, be vigilant, & please NEVER “victim/SURVIVOR shame” because in a blink of an eye it can happen and it can happen anywhere & to anyone.

And to all MMIW, women, men and children survivors & those who have never made it home, we remember you all, we pray for you, your families and for justice to be served.

I share my story, for you...

Be safe fam,

Day of the Dog

by Walter W.

It was your average Tuesday. Well, not exactly average. What ended up happening altered the course of human history as we know it, so one could hardly call it average. It was seemingly an ordinary day, and no one could have predicted or expected what was to take place, but started off in the usual way, nonetheless.

The dogs played dumb. Going-for-walks, sitting around at home, and greeting their masters, business as usual and no one was the wiser. The whole thing, it was later surmised, must have been planned, or in the makings of, for months. But the dogs, gave no sign of what was to come and led their lives in the most usual fashion.
Manny was a chief. He was a Shih-Tzu, barely 2 years old and typically adorable. He often wore a sly little smirk on his snout, but one had to look closely to see this, because his moppish hair obscured the fact. He was chosen for his intelligence. Being a Shih-Tzu, he was naturally intelligent but even among Shih-Tzus, Manny stood out.
Manny wept.

Once more, he was home all alone. His family had left for the day and he was by himself. The round edges of his little Shih-tzu's eyes welled up with tears. He crawled under the bed and cried.

Every day it was the same. The kids, off to school, sometimes remembered to give Manny a pat on the head goodbye. But more often than not, they just ran out the door. Bobby always remembered to give Manny fresh water, but usually if the kibble was there or not finished, he would not give any more. For hours on end, Manny drifted in and out of consciousness and tried hard to daydream. He would try to remember the fun he and Bobby had when they would go to the park together, before Bobby started high school.

No one knew that dogs could communicate with each other telepathically. No human, that is. Sure, a dog and its master could become very close and seem to read each other's minds at times, but dogs communicating with each other? For something of this scale to take place, animal telepathy and a general remorseful discontent with humans was most necessary.

Sheila was a Border Collie, seven years old, light brown and white and quite beautiful. She belonged to Leo Bettancourt, a financial trader who never could pay Sheila the full attention she deserved.

"I don't care. I need it before next week. I need it yesterday, you understand?" Sheila watched him with disappointed eyes, head on paws, as Leo yelped into the phone.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Sheila thought.
"Don't worry, this has to be done," Manny responded.

10:47 AM.
Rodney was a Black Labrador, a bit on in years at eleven and had something of a bad back. He belonged to Nina Bradley, a masseusse who lived on 51st and Broadway whose hours were flexible and fees were exorbitant. Rodney was in the middle of breakfast at 10:48 AM when he suddenly stopped, looked quickly over his left shoulder and went back to his meal.

I told those two to wait. If all goes well, I'll never have to eat Alpo again, Rodney thought to himself.
The walk-out was going to happen.

The dogs had a hierarchy. They needed organization for this to work and a system of classes and governing was necessary. There were 1 or 2 masterminds, a bunch of chiefs, and all the other dogs were followers. It was believed that the original idea came from the masterminds. Where they got it, no one knows.

No more tears, Manny thought to himself. The time is now. Manny got himself together and readied groups of dogs. Manny climbed into the dumbwaiter of the second story house and the weight of his little body sent it plunging. He jumped out and began to run. His impish face took a devilish wry countenance. No one noticed him. Because it was a business day, and after all he was just a little dog.

Sheila let out a barely audible whine and paced the narrow hallway of Leo's apartment a couple of times. "What is it girl, what's wrong?", said Leo.

I'm about to leave you, you damn fool, and I don't know if I can do it, Sheila thought. Leo stroked Sheila's neck, condescendingly.

Dogs began to leave. At first, in the first few minutes, the humans could not figure out what was happening. It was organized confusion. Dogs from all walks of life, houses and homes, apartments alike bolted from their owners. A door was open, a window ajar and BANG, the dog was gone.
Packs and packs of dogs gathered together between shrubbery in Central Park. Hundreds upon hundreds of dogs. By 11:15 AM, the humans got scared. Very scared.

"Sorry I'm late", said Manny.

"It's okay. We're early".

Manny and the other chiefs, mostly toy dogs, gathered together in a circle.

"Is it done? Did we really do it?"

"Yes. Every dog in New York City is here and accounted for. Every puppy, pound throwaway and lab specimen is present and saved. We're all here."
The dogs marveled at their own achievement. They sat for a few minutes, taking it all in.

"Then victory is ours. After all these years, victory is ours", said Rodney, belly still full of unwanted food.

"Well, then, let us bid this Earth farewell, shall we?", said an oversized Yorkie with remarkably regal features.

"Yes", said the dogs, en masse.

The crafts began to land.

And slowly, the dogs boarded, one by one

THREE. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

FOUR. When you say, 'I love you,' mean it. FIVE. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.

SIX. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

SEVEN. Believe in love at first sight.

EIGHT. Never laugh at anyone's dreams. People who don't have dreams don't have much.

NINE... Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.

TWENTY. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice

TWENTY- ONE. Spend some time alone.

Oh, the places I have been…

I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I’ve also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I’ve been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I’m in Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, and I don’t remember what country I was in. It’s an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

LIFE IS A THEATRE

Invite Your Audience Carefully

Not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives.

There are some people in your life that need to be loved from a DISTANCE.

It's amazing what you can accomplish when you let go of, or at least minimize your time with, draining, negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships/friendships.

Observe the relationships around you. Pay attention. Which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?

When you leave certain people do you feel better or feel worse? Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know or appreciate you?

The more you seek quality, respect, growth, peace of mind, love and truth around you... the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the front row and who should be moved to the balcony of Your Life.

"If you cannot change the people around you, CHANGE the people you are around."

Remember that the people we hang with will have an impact on both our lives and our income. And so we must be careful to choose the people we hang out with, as well as the information with which we feed our minds. We should not share our dreams with negative people, Nor feed our dreams with negative thoughts.

It's your choice and your life..... It's up to you who and what you let in it......

From Gautama Siddhartha

We are told that Gautama Siddhartha, the Buddha said these things:
Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

G O D

***Warning if you don't think there is a God you can ignore this post now, you have been advised nicely***

I like this story because people complain about their lives and blame God for it when in fact we are responsible for the actions we take.

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.

Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions. But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.

The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried. Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.

It is easy to get discouraged when things are going badly. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground--it just may be a smoke signal that summons The Grace of God.

My comments: He got what he wanted he didn't want to be on that island he wanted to be rescued but he was getting comfortable in the wrong place and lost sight of being rescued. P.S. God doesn't burn down houses or do bad things! People screw up and blame God for it.

I hope he was thankful that he was the only survivor of a shipwreck and he was finally rescued from a bad situation and that his prayers were answered with something better than "just something good" even though when this was all happening he didn't understand it because he was focusing only on what he could see in the present whereas God sees the big picture..

The Wooden Bowl

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about grandfather," said the son. I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor. So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfather's direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.

For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. Children are remarkably perceptive. Their eyes ever observe, their ears ever listen, and their minds ever process the messages they absorb. If they see us patiently provide a happy home atmosphere for family members, they will imitate that attitude for the rest of their lives. The wise parent realizes that every day that building blocks are being laid for the child's future.

Imbolc Facts, Dates, Traditions And Rituals To Know

We Wiccans (and many other pagans!) not only observe the groundhog thing, it's also a very important sabbat (holy day) for us...
Celebrants often prepare talismans to use during Imbolc ceremonies, including the Brigid's Cross.

For many in the U.S., the only ‘religious’ event this time of year is the Super Bowl. (This is important in Canada, even though most of us don't follow the Super Bowl). But for many pagans and Wiccans, February 2 marks the important holiday, Imbolc, and their attention may be focused somewhere other than the television screen.

1. Imbolc is one of four major pagan sabbats, or holidays, along with Beltane, Lughnasadh and Samhain. In between these sabbats, pagans celebrate the seasonal solstices and equinoxes.

2. Imbolc is pronounced “IM-bulk” or “EM-bowlk.”

3. Imbolc falls on the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Although it is attributed to the ancient Celts, ancient Egyptians, Babylonians and indigenous groups are also believed to have celebrated an equivalent holiday.

4. Nowadays Imbolc may be related to Candlemas and Groundhog Day, and indeed there is evidence from early Irish lore surrounding weather divination this time of year.

5. Also called Brigid’s Day, Imbolc honors the Celtic goddess of fire, fertility, midwifery and the young. Many Pagans will pay tribute to Brigid by arranging an altar and ‘invoking’ the goddess through prayer.

6. The term ‘Imbolc’ derives from Old Irish and means “in the belly,” or alternately “ewe’s milk.” The interpretation lends significance to the holiday as a celebration of fertility, reproduction and the young — all overseen by the goddess Brigid.

7. Imbolc observes the waning of winter and approach of spring. Pagans often use fire and other forms of light to encourage the lengthening of day. Seed and bud imagery may be used, as well, to promote the growth of new life ensured by springtime.

8. As with many pagan holidays, food and music are essential. Dishes for Imbolc tend to incorporate seeds, dairy and other spring-evoking foods.

9. Celebrants often prepare talismans to use during Imbolc ceremonies and then keep in their homes. These include a Brideog — a small straw doll dressed in white cloth — and a Brigid’s Cross, also often woven from straw.

10. Imbolc is a time for spring cleaning. Some clean their homes, take ritual baths and de-clutter their lives in other ways. This is believed to create space for the goddess to come into people’s live and for new seeds to take root in the coming spring.

Lawyers

A local United Way office realized that it had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute.

"Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?"

The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did your research also show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?"

Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, "Um. . . no."

" - or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?"

The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology but was interrupted,

" - or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indignation, "leaving her penniless with three children?!"

The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..."

On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again: "So if I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?!?"

The 411 - Groundhog Day

***In Canada we have Wiarton Willie***
PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL THE GROUNDHOG
PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL THE GROUNDHOG
Groundhog Day is an annual holiday celebrated on February 2. It is held in the United States and Canada. According to folklore, if a groundhog emerging from its burrow on this day fails to see its shadow, it will leave the burrow, signifying that winter will soon end. If on the other hand, the groundhog sees its shadow, the groundhog will supposedly retreat into its burrow, and winter will continue for six more weeks.

The holiday, which began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeastern and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries, has its origins in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or sacred bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a groundhog. The holiday also bears some similarities to the medieval Catholic holiday of Candlemas. It also bears similarities to the Pagan festival of Imbolc, the seasonal turning point of the Celtic calendar, which is celebrated on February 2 and also involves weather prognostication.

Modern customs of the holiday involve celebrations where early morning festivals are held to watch the groundhog emerging from its burrow. In southeastern Pennsylvania, Groundhog Lodges (Grundsow Lodges) celebrate the holiday with fersommlinge, social events in which food is served, speeches are made, and one or more g'spiel (plays or skits) are performed for entertainment. The Pennsylvania German dialect is the only language spoken at the event, and those who speak English pay a penalty, usually in the form of a nickel, dime or quarter, per word spoken, put into a bowl in the center of the table.

PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL THE GROUNDHOG
The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as high as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886. Other celebrations of note in Pennsylvania take place in Quarryville in Lancaster County, the Anthracite Region of Schuylkill County, the Sinnamahoning Valley and Bucks County. Outside of Pennsylvania, notable celebrations occur in the Frederick and Hagerstown areas of Maryland, the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Woodstock, Illinois, and among the Amish populations of over twenty states and Canada. The University of Dallas in Irving,Texas has taken Groundhog Day as its official university holiday and organizes a large-scale celebration every year in honor of the Groundhog.

Groundhog Day received worldwide attention as a result of the 1993 film of the same name, Groundhog Day, which was set in Punxsutawney (though filmed primarily in Woodstock, Illinois) and featured Punxsutawney Phil.

Sister Mary Kay Katherine

Sister Mary Kay Katherine entered the Monastery of Silence. The Priest said, "Sister, this is a silent monastery. You are welcome here as long as you like, but you may not speak until I direct you to do so".

Sister Mary Kay Katherine lived in the monastery for 5 years before the Priest said to her, "Sister Mary Kay Katherine, you have been here for 5 years. You may speak two words."

Sister Mary Kay Katherine said, "Hard bed."

"I'm sorry to hear that," the Priest said, "We will get you a better bed."

After another 5 years, Sister Mary Kay Katherine was called by the Priest. "You may say another two words, Sister Mary Kay Katherine.

"Cold food," said Sister Mary Kay Katherine, and the Priest assured her that the food would be better in the future.

On her 15th anniversary at the monastery, the Priest again called Sister Mary Kay Katherine into his office. "You may say two words today."

"I quit," said Sister Mary Kay Katherine.

"It's probably best", said the Priest, "You've done nothing but bitch since you got here."

Giggles, Guffaws, and Groaners

A couple, desperate to conceive a child, went to their priest and asked him to pray for them. "I'm going on a sabbatical to Rome," he replied, "and while I'm there, I'll light a candle for you."

When the priest returned three years later, he went to the couple's house and found the wife pregnant, busily attending to two sets of twins. Elated, the priest asked her where her husband was so that he could congratulate him.

"He's gone to Rome, to blow that candle out" came the harried reply.

Little Billy wanted $100 badly and prayed for two weeks but nothing happened.

Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100. When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, USA, they decided to send it to President Bush.

The President was so impressed, touched, and amused that he instructed his secretary to send Billy a $5.00 bill.

President Bush thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

Billy was delighted with the $5.00 and sat down to write a thank you note to God, which read:

Dear God,

Thank you very much for sending the money, however, I noticed that for some reason you had to send it through Washington D.C. and, as usual, those crooks deducted $95.00.

Thanks,

Billy
