Why Computers Sometimes Crash!
Not By Dr. Seuss.

(Read this to yourself aloud - it's great!)

Dr Suess- You're only old once

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
And the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,
And the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

If your cursor finds a menu item followed by a dash, And the double-clicking icon puts your window in the trash,
And your data is corrupted cause the index doesn't hash,
Then your situation's hopeless and your system's gonna crash!

If the label on the cable on the table at your house, Says the network is connected to the button on your mouse,
But your packets want to tunnel to another protocol, That's repeatedly rejected by the printer down the hall.

And your screen is all distorted by the side effects of gauss,
So your icons in the window are as wavy as a souse; Then you may as well reboot and go out with a bang, 'Cuz sure as I'm a poet, the sucker's gonna hang.

When the copy on your floppy's getting sloppy in the disk,
And the macro code instructions are causing serious risk,
Then you'll have to flash the memory and you'll want to RAM your ROM,
And then quickly turn off the computer and be sure to tell your Mom!

Well, that certainly clears things up for me. How about you?

Bill Gatus of Borg
Thank you Bill Gates, for bringing all this into our lives,
and to think it all started with Widoze 95!

(actually he had us YEARS before that!)

Jet Turbine Engine vs A Bird....Guess who wins!

Bird vs. Jet Engine...

Below is video of an Rolls Royce engine on a test stand undergoing a 'Bird Ingestion' test. This test is accomplished by firing a bird, [generally a dead chicken complete with feathers and internal organs] at the engine. The bird's weight is a function of the inlet and fan diameter, This test is considered a success if the failure was completely contained, [i. e. No engine parts penetrated the engine cases or the aircraft cowling and there is no sustained external fire]. It does not take long for the engine to digest the bird as well as a significant number of its' own blades & vanes. The video lasts 33 seconds and the bird is fired into the engine at the 17 second mark......

Shake, Rattle, and Roll..............

Now you have some idea what the pilot of that US Air flight faced when he ingested birds into both engines simultaneously!! It also gives you a fair idea why the one engine's mounts failed after the water landing and dropped off the wing.

More than One Use for "Bounce" fabric softener sheets...

The US Postal service sent out a message to all letter carriers to put a sheet of Bounce in their uniform pockets to keep yellow jackets away.

Use them all the time when playing baseball and soccer.

Use it working outside. It really works. The yellow jackets just veer around you.

And all this time you've just been putting Bounce in the dryer!

It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them.

It also repels mice.. spread them around foundation areas, or in trailers, cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle.

It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often.

Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season.

Eliminates static electricity from your television (or computer) screen.

Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling.

Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce.

Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet.

Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner.

Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew.

Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing.

Freshen the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat.

Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The anti-static agent apparently weakens the bond between the food.

Eliminate odors in wastebaskets. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket.

Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs.

Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling.

Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth.

Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper.

Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight.

Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away.

Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. Keeps them smelling fresh.

Happy 4th of July!

RAGGED OLD FLAG

I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, "Your old courthouse is kinda run down."
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town."
I said, "Your flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that's a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it.

He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down.
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town?"
I said, "I think it is." He said, "I don't like to brag,
But we're kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag."

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing Oh Say Can You See".
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin' at its seams."

"And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on through.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag."

"On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun.
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam."

"She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they've about quit waving her back here at home.
In her own good land she's been abused --
She's been burned, dishonored, denied and refused."

"And the government for which she stands
Is scandalized throughout the land.
And she's getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she's in good shape for the shape she's in.
'Cause she's been through the fire before
And I believe she can take a whole lot more."

"So we raise her up every morning,
Take her down every night.
We don't let her touch the ground
And we fold her up right.
On second thought I DO like to brag,
'Cause I'm mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag."

The Million Dollar Homepage

The Power of the PIXEL!
The Million Dollar Homepage
Entrepreneurial Spirit!

The Million Dollar Homepage is a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, a student from Wiltshire, England, to raise money for his university education. The home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000 × 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it were sold for $1 per pixel in blocks. The purchasers of these pixel blocks provided tiny images to be displayed on them, a URL to which the images were linked, and a slogan to be displayed when hovering a cursor over the link. The aim of the website was to sell all of the pixels in the image, thus generating a million dollars of income for the creator. The Wall Street Journal has commented that the site inspired other websites that sell pixels.

Polar Clock - A Geek's Delight!

Polar Clock Screensaver Krista

The Polar Clock is fantabulous for those geeks like me! I mean what's cooler than having a wacky screensaver that moves in circles and also reeks of coolness and tells the time???? This one is sure to get stares from office co-workers - not likely to get you a date tho'

PolarClock 3.0 is now available as a screen saver for Windows, Mac, and also as a dashboard widget for OSX Tiger. There is a version for the iPhone, but to my chagrin - no BlackBerry one. (BlackBerry's do not support flash yet! and WHY NOT, I might add!)

Top Dirty Tricks Scammers Use

Beware the outlandish come-ons and pick-up lines you'll encounter when criminals are on the prowl.

What the average guy might call a con is known in the security world as social engineering. Social engineering is the criminal art of scamming a person into doing something or divulging sensitive information. These days, there are thousands of ways for con artists to pull off their tricks. Here we look at some of the most common lines these people are using to fool their victims.

Ten miles to burn a Big Mac

Exercise drive ... McDonalds

FAST food fans must walk almost TEN miles to work off the calories in a Big Mac Meal. This was revealed yesterday as the hamburger giant launched its own EXERCISE drive.

It started selling £3.99 adult Happy Meals boxes — each containing a step-counter, salad, soft drink, and exercise leaflet — to encourage people to walk their food off.

But nutritionists calculated the Big Mac Meal, which includes fries and milkshake, packs 1,411 calories — requiring 9½ miles to burn.

Even a new 295cal Go Active salad requires a 2.5-mile walk. The average man needs 2,500 calories a day. Women need 2,000.

McDonald’s bosses — stung by criticism they were fuelling Britain’s fat epidemic in their restaurants — trumpeted the launch of the salad range last March.

Last night Sun health expert Nicki Waterman said: “It’s good to see McDonald’s trying to get the nation fitter but their food has too many calories. It’s OK saying replace fries with salad but their dressings have more calories than the burgers.”

A McDonald’s spokesman countered: “There’s plenty of choice and variety to meet the requirements of a balanced diet. If you want to be selective, you can pick out just the high-calorie meals.”

Brutus The Baby Sitter

The ending is quite amazing after you read the beginning...
Brutus
The K9 above is Brutus, a military K9 at McChord.

He's huge - part Boxer and part British Bull Mastiff and tops the scales at 200 lbs. His handler took the picture.

Brutus is running toward me because he knows, I have some Milkbone treats, so he's slobbering away!

I had to duck around a tree just before he got to me in case he couldn't stop, but he did.

Brutus was the recipient of the Congressional Medal Of Honor last year from his tour in Iraq .

His handler and four other soldiers were taken hostage by insurgents.

Brutus and his handler communicate by sign language and he gave Brutus the signal that meant 'go away but come back and find me'.

The Iraqis paid no attention to Brutus.

He came back later and quietly tore the throat out of one guard at one door and another guard at another door.

He then jumped against one of the doors repeatedly (the guys were being held in an old warehouse) until it opened.

He went in and untied his handler, and they all escaped.

He's the first K9 to receive this honor.

If he knows you're OK, he's a big old lug and wants to sit in your lap.

He enjoys the company of cats.

K-9 Congressional Medal of Honor Winner thought you'd find this interesting.

Talk about animal intelligence and bonding with humans!

Remember that they can't do a lot of things for themselves and they depend on you to make their life a quality life!

The Gay Witch!

The Gay WitchModern day religion has shunned both gay and lesbian followers, while Witchcraft, Wicca, still embraces both gay men and lesbian women. My feeling is that the leaders of certain religious sects that follow the path of Christ, greatly underestimates the value of our community, and mistakenly underestimates our worth in this world that we live in.

I have never bought into the belief that men nor women were created in the image of God, the Godhead is a concept that without us wouldn't even exist, for God to exist he or she must have followers, they must have believers, the Godhead is like everything else in this world, it is pure energy and for that energy to continue to grow it must be fed!

The politics that surround religion can be traced back to the beginning of time, but who is to say really when time first began, time is a magical concept that no one really understands, and yet there has been millions of dollars spent by modern day scientists trying to harness its power!

Throughout the ages homosexuality has been present and in just about any era traces can be found amongst the most famous and powerful of men and women. My belief is that the world is dynamically made up of a diverse group of people who have lessons to learn in both the masculine and feminine shell (body) and as we progress our spirits crossover prematurely and still have lessons to learn from it's past incarnation and so, when reborn, it still attempts to act out the lessons from it's most recent life, and although it may have chosen a masculine body for its current life, it may result in a feminine spirit trapped in a masculine body which proceeds to act out the lessons that it should have learned in its previous life, and in its previous body, therefore resulting in some very stylish and well dressed men! (lol)

When the spirit makes a decision on the soul level it is not a rational decision, the process used to derive at that decision is entirely different from the one that you and I use in the physical realm to make our day-to-day decisions and choices about how we are to proceed.

Homosexuality is not a mistake, it is a lesson to be learned by all whose path it crosses, it is not a choice and even if it were, chances are that we, Gay Men and Lesbian Women as a whole would not choose a life that is destined to be filled with such strife! Why would anyone choose to be this different? Why would anyone choose a life where you are consider a freak, a modern day leopard? I cannot speak for my gay and lesbian counterparts, I can only speak for myself, and I can say this with the utmost honesty, if I were given a conscious choice, if I could decide to be straight or gay, there would be no debate or question in my mind, I would choose to be gay! I would choose to be labeled a freak and I would gladly welcome a life filled with strife, why?

Political System:

Canada is a federal parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. The Canadian parliamentary system is modeled after the British form of government and consists of the Crown, Senate and House of Commons.

The Crown, or Queen, is the traditional Head of State who is represented in Canada by the Governor General. The Crown delegates authority to the Governor General, who acts on her behalf in a mostly symbolic role as the Head of State. The office of the Governor General is one of Canada's oldest institutions, dating back almost 400 years.

The Senate, or Upper House, consists of 105 members appointed by the Governor General upon the advice of the Prime Minister. The Senate and House of Commons share similar authorities, but only the House of Commons can introduce financial legislation. The House of Commons, or Lower House, is the primary legislative body of Parliament representing 301 Canadian electoral districts.

Every five years voters elect local members to the House of Commons and the political party with the most representatives forms the government. The party leader becomes the Head of Government or Prime Minister; The Right Honourable Paul Martin is the current and twentieth-first Prime Minister.

Get detailed information about the history and function of Parliament. Learn more about the office of the Prime Minister or role of the Governor General.

National Emblem

Historically, Canada's most important national emblem has been the maple leaf. The maple leaf, in variant forms and colours, has appeared on the penny, Canadian coats of arms and regimental banners. In 1965 the maple leaf became the central design on the Canadian national flag. The red maple leaf is recognized world-wide as a Canadian symbol.

Visit the Canadian Heritage Web site for more details about the national flag.

O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

Culture and Language

Canada's culture and official language policy are features that are unique to Canada. To learn more about culture, languages, education, communications and economy in Canada, take a look at the Canadian profile on the Canadian Heritage Web site.

Geography and Climate:

Canada's climate varies throughout the country. Each region experiences variable temperature and precipitation levels, although most of Canada experiences four distinct seasons.

  • Spring — Average temperature = 15 degrees Celsius

  • Summer — Average temperature = 25 degrees Celsius

  • Fall — Average temperature = 15 degrees Celsius

  • Winter — Average temperature = -25 degrees Celsius

Like its climate, Canada has a diverse geography that varies regionally. Canada encompasses several geographical elements - from Arctic tundra in the north, lush rain forests in the west, the Prairie wheat fields in central Canada, to the rugged coastlines of the Atlantic and Pacific provinces.

Canada has several distinct geographic and climatic regions:

The Pacific or West Coast — enjoys Canada's most favourable climate. The warm Pacific Ocean air produces a temperate rain forest climate. The winters, although mild, include significant precipitation - particularly in southern British Columbia. The northern and interior regions, however, experience heavy snowfall.

The Cordillera or Cordilleran mountain range, extends from British Columbia to Alberta and as far north as the Yukon. The Cordillera include the Coastal Range, the Rockies and St. Elias Mountains.

The Prairies — encompass the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta from east to west. The Prairies, considered world leaders in grain production, are famous for their seemingly endless fields of grain.

Prairie summers are hot and dry with little precipitation. Levels of precipitation vary somewhat across the region however, with annual rates ranging from 300 to 500 mm. The "chinook" winds of the Prairies counteract the long, cold winters producing milder temperatures, sometimes as much as 20 degrees in a matter of hours.

The Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Region — is home to half of Canada's population. Summer temperatures average 20 degrees Celsius, but may feel considerably warmer with the humidity. Winters in this region are typically cold with heavy snowfall.

This area has some of the best agricultural land in Canada. It is suitable for growing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. The Niagara Peninsula region produces several quality wines. Maple syrup and sugar are other products of the Great Lakes region.

The Atlantic or Maritime Region — experiences high levels of precipitation throughout the year due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean. The winters are characteristically cold with heavy periods of snowfall. During the summer temperatures may range from 16 to 18 degrees Celsius. Fog is prevalent in some Atlantic areas, particularly in the spring and summer.

The North or Arctic Regions — is blanketed in snow much of the year. A northern summer consists of four months of perpetual sunlight with temperatures reaching 10 to 20 degrees Celsius, in the arctic and sub-arctic respectively. The summer permafrost allows for the growth of vegetative life. The long, cold winters, with very few hours of daylight, are brightened by The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis.

For more information about the Canadian climate, visit the Environment Canada Web site.

Like many large countries, Canada has several time zones. Canada uses six Standard Time Zones and observes Daylight Savings Time in every province but Saskatchewan.

National Parks and National Historic Sites:

In 1885, the Canadian government established the first national park in Banff, Alberta. Today, there are more than forty National Parks that occupy approximately 2 percent of Canada's total landmass. Canada's National Park system is monitored and protected by Parks Canada. All levels of government recognize the urgency of preserving the ecological integrity of Canada's parks for generations to come.

In addition, Parks Canada and Canadian Heritage strive to commemorate the people, places and events of national historic significance. Canada has designated more than 800 National Historic Sites throughout the country. These sites represent the variety of Canada's unique history, culture and people.

Canada is also home to thirteen UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Countries worldwide share the responsibility of preserving sites of ecological or biological universal importance.

    149 Years Young!

    Strong and Free, 2000

    Together we are Canada

    My name is British Columbia
The jewel of the West Coast.
    Forestry and fishing are
The things that I do most

    Hi, I am Alberta
A wild west kind of place
With cows and oil and mountains
    And lots of open space.

    I am Manitoba
    And I’m Saskatchewan
    We’re the golden prairies
Where fields of wheat grow in the sun

    Hi, I am Ontario
    The home of government
To me each year the leaders
    Of our democracy are sent.

    Bonjour, I am Quebec
Here French is my language too
When I want to ask “how are you?”
    I say, “comment t’allez vous?”

    Newfoundland, New Brunswick
And Nova Scotia -- those are we,
    We are Atlantic Provinces
The three musketeers of the sea.

    I’m Prince Edward Island
And I know I may be small
But without me all the rest of you
Would have no potatoes at all.

The Yukon, Nunavut and North West
    Territories are up north.
Through ice and cold and polar bears
    Few brave souls venture forth.

    Together we are Canada
    One nation strong and free
    With sharing, friends and happiness
    Forever we will be!
