Our Time to Shine

By Corey Hildebrand

Many years ago
On this prairie land we know
A settlement began
They heard the call of the land

Saskatoon Shines

Their dedication gives us celebration
Their dreams set in motion all we have today

Saskatoon Shines

Our time to shine
In our hearts and in our mind
Let the past one hundred years make us see

Saskatoon Shines

Our city will stand tall
Saskatoon welcomes all
Let the spirit of the land set you free

'Cause this is our time to shine

People came from all around
The city grew by leaps and bounds
Stretched along the river far as the eye could see

Saskatoon Shines

We saw their vision a city of bridges
Cultures joined together from the present to the past

Saskatoon Shines

Our time to shine
In our hearts and in our mind
Let the past one hundred years make us see

Saskatoon Shines

Our city will stand tall
Saskatoon welcomes all
Let the spirit of the land set you free

'Cause this is our time to shine

The super hero poem

super hero

when I grow up I'm going to be president

start wars with a twitch of my fingers

attend extravagant balls with thousand dollar gift baskets

be invited to premieres and opening nights

and sleep in a huge four-poster bed once shared by Clinton and... somebody.

I'd go to foreign countries with weird good

and shakes hands with gross old politicians

who slime, "Good evening madam president."

and I'd have to host that goddamn Easter Egg hunt on the lawn

and take photographs with squirming kids...

maybe I don't want to be president

when I grow up I'm going to be a superhero

I will be invisible and invincible

and I will FLY

my costume will be red converse high-tops

and a neon green leotard

my theme song would be:

Here I come to save the day!

or maybe without words at all:

daan da da DAAN, daan da daa...

but every single time someone lost their keys

or were being held hostage by an evil supervillain

they'd call me out of bed to come save them

probably at fricking three AM

when I grow up I'm going to be French.

one of those chic Parisian girls

with that certain je nai sais quois

and trendy European shoes

I'll sip coffee and eat those cute little pastries

at a cafe by the Seine

and I'll date an artist named Jacques

we'll hang out with our artsy friends

who don't shower

or shave their body hair

and get so drunk every night they start calling Jacques "Monique" and chasing him with paintbrushes...

I don't even know how to speak French!

when you grow up, you'll be mothers and fathers,

rodeo clowns and Chuck E. Cheese counterstaff

you'll starve and you'll be wealthy

but me...?

well, don't you worry about me

I'm not going to grow up at all.

April Fool...

The origin of April Fools' Day is obscure. One likely theory is that the modern holiday was first celebrated soon after the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar; the term referred to someone still adhering to the Julian Calendar which it replaced.

In many pre-Christian cultures May Day (May 1) was celebrated as the first day of summer, and signalled the start of the spring planting season. An April Fool was someone who did this prematurely.

Another origin is that April 1 was counted the first day of the year in France. When King Charles IX changed that to January 1, some people stayed with April 1. Those who did were called "April Fools" and were taunted by their neighbors.

You are an April Fool!
In the eighteenth century the festival was often posited as going back to the times of Noah. An English newspaper article published on April 13th, 1789 said that the day had its origins when he sent the raven off too early, before the waters had receded. He did this on the first day of the Hebrew month that corresponds with April. A possible reference to April Fools' Day can be seen in the Canterbury Tales (ca 1400) in the Nun's Priest's tale, a tale of two fools: Chanticleer and the fox, which took place on March 32nd.

Top 100 April Fool's Day Hoaxes of All Time

(From the website: "museumofhoaxes.com) As judged by notoriety, creativity, and number of people duped.

Note from the Curator: I created the first version of this list in the late 1990s. Back then, there was hardly any information collected about April Fool's Day pranks, so I had to do a lot of research in newspaper archives to put this together. Luckily I was in grad school, so I had a lot of spare time on my hands ;-). Over the years I've tweaked the list, rearranging it slightly and adding new entries based on reader feedback and ongoing research, but my top choices have remained pretty much the same. This list is easily the most popular article I've ever posted on the Museum of Hoaxes. Extracts from it (some attributed, some not) can be found on hundreds of other websites. Plus, it's inspired some spinoffs. A couple of years ago, someone created an iPhone app version of it (which I've never seen because I don't have an iPhone), and the folks at the Drama Pod created a dramatized audio version of it in 2011. I hope you enjoy it — and if you know of any old hoaxes that I haven't mentioned on the site, send me an email and let me know. ~Alex
