Ubuntu's 20th anniversary in 2024 was marked by the release of version 24.10, codenamed Oracular Oriole. Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, commemorated this milestone by paying homage to the original release, Ubuntu 4.10 "Warty Warthog." Released in October 2004, Warty Warthog helped popularize Linux by making it more accessible to everyday users. This anniversary release includes several nostalgic elements, such as the original brown-themed desktop accent colour and the startup sound from 2004. A retro wallpaper with the iconic Ubuntu "Circle of Friends" symbol and the "20 Years of Ubuntu" logo also add to the celebration.
Functionally, Ubuntu
24.10 brings updates aimed at improving user experience across devices,
notably with better ARM64 device support and interface tweaks designed
to enhance usability on smartphones and tablets. Features like the
updated GNOME Initial Setup tool simplify the initial setup process,
catering to modern users looking for ease of use on both desktop and
mobile platforms. On the server side, new tools like kdump
for crash management and Valkey, a high-performance key/value data
store, were introduced to address enterprise and stability needs, a nod
to Ubuntu's substantial impact in enterprise environments over the past
two decades.
Ubuntu's journey has seen it evolve from a user-friendly Debian-based alternative into a widely recognized OS, synonymous with Linux for many users worldwide. The "Oracular Oriole" release showcases Ubuntu’s growth and its ambition to continue shaping the open-source landscape for many more years to come.
The Wizard has been using Ubuntu since 2010, now using Ubuntu MATE, one of Ubuntu's Official "Flavours".
