Canadian Comedy Legend Dave Broadfoot Dies at 90
from The Hollywood Reporter

Dave Broadfoot, a Canadian comedy legend for his political satire on the long-running CBC comedy series Royal Canadian Air Farce, has died. He was 90.

"From the early days on radio with Funny You Should Say That to The Air Farce and his own television specials, Dave filled Canadian homes with laughter over many decades. He was a comedy pioneer who will be dearly missed by his family, legion of fans and former CBC colleagues," CBC's general manager of programming, Sally Catto, told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement Wednesday.

Born in North Vancouver in 1925, Broadfoot first appeared on the CBC, Canada's public broadcaster, in 1952, as a stand-up comic on The Big Revue and the Spring Thaw series. He appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1955.

By 1973, Broadfoot was a founding member of The Royal Canadian Air Farce alongside castmembers Roger Abbott, Don Ferguson, Luba Goy and John Morgan. His famous sketch comedy characters included the Honorable Member for Kicking Horse Pass, Corporal Renfrew of the RCMP and Big Bobby Clobber, a hockey player with one too many concussions.

"Dave Broadfoot's memorable characters made us laugh in a uniquely Canadian way. My sincere condolences to his loved ones," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on his Twitter account. Broadfoot's long career was also celebrated by fellow CBC entertainers.

"Today we lost not only Dave Broadfoot but Sgt Renfrew, Big Bobby Clobber, the Member for Kicking Horse pass & countless others. Huge loss," This Hour has 22 Minutes star Mark Critch tweeted.
