The outcry surrounding a gay TV program is continuing to be felt across America.
Two more television stations have announced that they will not air the new NBC drama The Book of Daniel, about an Episcopal priest with a gay son, because of pressure from viewers about the show's content.
The two stations, WTVA in Tupelo, Mississippi, and KAMR in Amarillo, Texas, bring to six the total number of NBC affiliates that have cancelled the show. Two other stations in Mississippi and Texas, as well as one each in Arkansas and Indiana, pulled the show last week.
The Tupelo-based American Family Association, a conservative religious organization, has coordinated an effort with other right-wing groups to protest Daniel. The groups claim it portrays Christians in an unflattering way.
The Book of Daniel dramatises the life of an Episcopal priest named Daniel Webster and his family, which includes a gay adult son, a sexually active teenage son, a daughter caught selling marijuana and a wife who's no stranger to afternoon martinis.
In addition, the priest receives casual visits from a bearded Jesus who counsels and sometimes jokes with Webster, who strives to be a good priest, husband and father.
The NBC series debuted January 7.
Tupelo station WTVA said it received 1,500 e-mails and phone calls asking the station not to air the show, compared with three in support of the show, the Associated Press reported. The station aired infomercials instead.
NBC has defended the show, calling it a "thought-provoking examination of one American family".
