Why I use Ubuntu MATE and not regular Ubuntu

Ubuntu MATE desktop

Ubuntu MATE is an official flavour of Ubuntu, with many differences.

Here are some objective differences between Ubuntu MATE and regular Ubuntu that shows its better for my needs:

  1. Desktop Environment: Ubuntu MATE uses the MATE desktop environment, which is a lightweight and traditional interface that resembles the classic GNOME 2. Regular Ubuntu, on the other hand, uses the default GNOME desktop environment that comes with the latest version of GNOME Shell.

  2. Resource Consumption: Ubuntu MATE is known for its efficient use of system resources, making it an ideal choice for older computers or those with limited hardware specifications. Regular Ubuntu may consume more system resources due to its more modern and feature-rich desktop environment.

  3. Customization: Ubuntu MATE provides users with more customization options than regular Ubuntu, allowing them to tweak the appearance and functionality of the desktop environment to their liking.

  4. Ease of Use: Ubuntu MATE is often considered to be more user-friendly than regular Ubuntu, especially for those who are new to Linux or prefer a more traditional desktop interface.

  5. Stability: Ubuntu MATE is known for its stability and reliability, making it a popular choice for users like me who prioritize these features over bleeding-edge software.

If you have an older computer like mine, or prefer a more traditional desktop environment, Ubuntu MATE may be a better choice for you.
