"It's a boy! It's a boy!"
A statement now from the Prince of Wales:
"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."
The baby boy was born at 4:24 p.m., weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces. A name has not yet been announced for the child, who is now third in line to the throne.
"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well," read an official announcement that was placed outside Buckingham Palace.
"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine ,and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy," Prince Charles and wife Camilla said in a statement.
The child's title will be His or Her Royal Highness Prince or Princess (the baby's name) of Cambridge, St. James's Palace said this month.
Protocol dictates that the first to know about the arrival of the baby would have been Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister David Cameron and the governors general of each of the Commonwealth nations -- along with the rest of the royal and Middleton families.
"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," the palace statement said.
Their newborn son is third in line to the throne, following his grandfather Prince Charles and Prince William. The arrival of the new heir to the throne pushes William's brother, Prince Harry, to fourth in the line of succession.
