Make Summer 2009, the Summer of Stonewall...

This summer, the LGBT community will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, and the birth of our movement for equality. In the forty years since Stonewall, the LGBT community has made astounding progress in our quest for full equality - from local and state anti-discrimination laws to the striking down of all sodomy laws in 2003. Over that same period, our community has created an impressive array of organizations that serve millions of Americans every year.

But our movement and our community also have much further to go.

Despite recent wins on the marriage front, the "Defense of Marriage Act" is still on the books ... gays and lesbians are still being thrown out of the military ... adolescent suicides are still taking place as a result of anti-gay bullying ... and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act is still languishing in Congress.

That's why this summer is a perfect time to look back, take stock, and envision the way forward for LGBT America. And that's exactly what IN THE LIFE is doing with our 80-day Summer of Stonewall campaign.

Our Summer of Stonewall campaign kicked-off on May 20th with the first of 40 days of highlights - one for each year since 1969 - from our fight for equality. Each day, we're adding a different year with a corresponding capsule from our movement. Then, starting on June 29, we will detail 40 ways that you can get involved to advance social justice for LGBT people throughout the summer.
