Macrobiotics originated in Japan during the 5th century.

Macrobiotics, a philosophy and diet based on the principles of yin and yang, did originate in Japan, but it was in the early 1900s. The originator, George Ohsawa, was a teenager when he contracted tuberculosis. He listened to the advice of a doctor who was treating patients by eliminating dairy, eggs, and refined grains from their diet, and switching them to whole grains and vegetables. The diet worked, leading Ohsawa to study the principles of yin and yang, and to develop the concept of macrobiotics.

Roald Dahl, author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, was once married to actress Doris Day.

Roald Dahl was married to another actress, Patricia Neal, who appeared in classic films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Dahl was born on September 13, 1916, and died in 1990. He is the author of several eccentric and highly entertaining children’s books, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, The Witches, and Fantastic Mr. Fox.

The two major earthquakes to hit San Francisco—in 1906 and 1989—occurred at the same time.

The April 18, 1906, earthquake occurred at about 5:12 A.M. It was felt as far away as Los Angeles to the south and Coos Bay, Oregon, to the north. The second one, on October 17, 1989, occurred at 5:04 P.M.—during a World Series game between the S.F. Giants and the Oakland A’s. Both quakes occurred along the San Andreas Fault, which meanders inland for 800 miles from the Gulf of California before heading out to the ocean in Pacifica, just south of San Francisco.

Brigham Young founded the Mormon religion in Utah.

Brigham Young was the second leader of the Mormon religion, which was founded around 1830, in New York State, by Joseph Smith. Smith claimed that it was based on golden plates given to him by an angel named Moroni. He translated the plates into English, creating and publishing the Book of Mormon. Smith attracted many followers, but also enemies, and was eventually murdered by a mob while held in prison.
