The great “leap to freedom” in the dance world refers to Rudolf Nureyev’s daring escape from the Russian KGB at Le Bourget airport in Paris in 1961.






After defecting to the West, Nureyev quickly became a superstar of ballet, receiving wild acclaim on par with other counterculture heroes of the time, like Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol. He joined London’s Royal Ballet and partnered with Margot Fonteyn, giving new life to such classics as Giselle and Swan Lake. He died of AIDS complications in 1993.
