SASKATOON - City councillors in Saskatoon have given unanimous approval for their solicitor to draw up an anti-spitting bylaw. It will also forbid public urination and littering.
Councillor Miles Heidt says it is about time the city did something about people spitting in public.
" It's unhealthy and it's disgusting," says Heidt. "You can't walk on the city streets without hitting all this chewing tobacco and business people tell me [people are] spitting on windows."
"Quite frankly, we can do something about it now," adds Heidt.
He says a new bylaw won't take away from resources meant for serious crimes. People who are "caught in the act" will be ticketed by police or bylaw officers.
Heidt says the proposed $250 fine should be a sufficient deterrent against public spitting, urinating or littering.
