In November's Grasp

cold smiley

In the northern embrace where autumn still weeps,
November descends, and the world softly sleeps,
A quiet dance of leaves, a whispered, fading song,
As nature dons its sombre cloak, in twilight, it belongs.

The trees, once ablaze in a fiery embrace,
Now stand bare, their glory an echo of grace,
A hush falls upon the land, a soft and misty shroud,
A time to reflect, in silence we're endowed.

Crisp air whispers secrets of days long passed,
As the sun retreats, its warmth doesn't last,
November, the poet of the dwindling light,
Paints the canvas of the day with strokes so light.

Fields, once alive in a tapestry of green,
Now don hues of amber, a quiet scene,
Yet the spirit remains, steadfast and serene,
In the heart of November, a quiet dream.

Cozy hearths beckon, fireside tales spun,
Echoes of laughter, hearts gently won,
As darkness lengthens its mystical hold,
November's tale, ancient and bold.

The scent of earth, of dampened leaves,
Crackling fires, what the heart believes,
In this November, a melancholic grace,
A reminder of life's ever-changing embrace.

Through the chill, a promise softly whispers,
Of renewal, of hope, of dreams that glisten,
For in November's quiet, there lies a seed,
Of life's eternal cycle, a truth we need.

So let us embrace this November's cool,
As autumn surrenders, as winter shall rule,
For in the quiet moments, there's beauty to find,
In November's grasp, in its tender bind.

Clothes make the man

clothes
The practice of wearing clothes and using footwear has evolved for various practical, cultural, social, and environmental reasons. Here are some key points explaining the rationale behind wearing clothes and shoes:

1. Protection and Adaptation:

  • Protection from Environment: Clothes and shoes provide protection against the elements (e.g., extreme weather, sun exposure, cold, heat) and physical hazards, helping humans adapt to a wide range of environments.

  • Injury Prevention: Shoes offer protection from sharp objects, rough terrain, and other potential sources of foot injuries, promoting safety and mobility.

2. Modesty and Social Norms:

  • Cultural and Social Reasons: Clothing is deeply tied to cultural, religious, and societal norms, representing identity, status, and modesty. Different cultures have varying standards of modesty and style.

  • Expression and Identity: Clothing can be a means of self-expression, showcasing personal style, beliefs, values, and affiliations with specific groups or communities.

3. Hygiene and Comfort:

  • Hygiene and Cleanliness: Clothes help maintain personal hygiene by preventing direct contact with sweat, skin oils, and other bodily secretions. They also help in managing odour.

  • Comfort and Well-being: Properly chosen clothing and footwear enhance comfort and overall well-being, contributing to a person's confidence and productivity.

4. Evolutionary Adaptations:

  • Loss of Body Hair: Compared to our evolutionary ancestors, modern humans have less body hair, making clothing necessary for thermal regulation and protection from the elements.

  • Biological Changes: Over time, our bodies have adapted to clothing and footwear. The reduced need for natural bodily defences like calluses is a trade-off for the benefits of protection and comfort that clothing and shoes provide.

5. Cultural Norms and Practicality:

  • Social Expectations: Society sets expectations regarding appropriate clothing based on location, event, profession, and occasion. Adhering to these norms helps individuals navigate social interactions and expectations.

  • Practical Considerations: Clothes and shoes are designed for practicality, aiding in tasks and activities such as work, sports, and daily routines.

While it's true that some aspects of wearing shoes and certain types of clothing might alter our bodies slightly, the benefits in terms of protection, comfort, hygiene, and social integration generally outweigh the potential drawbacks. Evolutionarily, humans have adapted to utilizing clothing and footwear, allowing us to thrive and succeed in diverse environments and societies.

Barista to the rescue

Note on Starbucks cup

“My 18-year-old daughter was at Starbucks, alone, the other night.

A man came up to her and started talking to her. A barista handed her “an extra hot chocolate someone forgot to pick up.” How grateful I am for people who look out for other people!

Side note: She felt safe and did not remove the lid, but let them know. She said the whole team was watching over her the rest of the time she was there.

Thank you to the team at Starbucks on Staples and SPID in Corpus Christi.”
