The news was sadly confirmed today on the musician’s Facebook page, with the message “Scott Weiland, best known as the lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts. At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected.”

According to police reports, officers in Bloomington, Minnesota responded to a call about an unresponsive male and found Weiland dead inside a motor vehicle parked in front of a hotel.

Weiland founded 90s alternative group Stone Temple Pilots alongside Robert and Dean DeLeo in 1990, with the band releasing their debut album Core in 1993. The group went on to release two more albums and win a Grammy for their song Plush before inner-turmoil, many of it related to substance abuse issues, led to extended hiatuses.
