PicassoPicasso exhibition to make sole Canadian stop at AGO

TORONTO (The Canadian Press) — A major Picasso exhibition will make its exclusive Canadian stop at the Art Gallery of Ontario next year.

The AGO says "Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris" will be on view at the Toronto gallery for 17 weeks, starting on April 28.

The show comprises more than 5,000 works that Pablo Picasso kept for himself and his family over the course of his 75-year career, including paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings.

It also shows Picasso's inspirations and his depictions of his numerous muses and mistresses.

Highlights include "The Death of Casagemas," one of the first works he created in Paris in 1901, as well as his 1906 "Autoportrait (Self-Portrait)" and "The Matador," painted in 1970, three years before his death.

Other items in the show include the 1904 Blue-period masterpiece "Celestina (The Woman with One-Eye)," and "The Two Brothers," a 1906 work from his Rose period.

The exhibition is touring the world while the Musee undergoes a multi-year renovation that's scheduled to end next year.

The AGO is the sole Canadian and final venue on the tour, which includes stops in Madrid, Abu Dhabi, Tokyo, Moscow, Seattle, San Francisco and Sydney.
