According to local press, three men were hanged in Iran on Sunday for having gay sex.
ISNA, the state run Iranian news agency, reports the men were killed for committing “unlawful” acts and acts against Sharia based on articles 108 and 110 of the Iranian Islamic penal code. According to Article 108, “Sodomy (or Lavat) is sexual intercourse between men,” is punishable by death.
The men, only identified as M.T., T.T. and M.Ch, were also convicted of kidnapping and robbery.
Iranian Human Rights spokesman Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam says this is one of the “rare cases” in which the government admitted to put people to death for homosexual acts. “Iranian authorities normally present such cases as rape,” Amiry-Moghaddam said.
Amiry-Moghaddam added that more executions are scheduled to take place.
“After a short break in the executions due to the Holy month of Ramadan, we have received reports about many scheduled executions in the coming days and weeks in Iran,” Amiry-Moghaddam said. “Many of the scheduled executions are planned to be carried out publically.”
