SASKATOON — Temperature records across the Prairies were shattered Wednesday as a mass of cold arctic air settled over the region.
In Saskatchewan, 14 daily air records were broken in places such as Meadow Lake, Regina, Rosetown, Weyburn and Melfort, said Environment Canada meteorologist Dave Carlsen.
The coldest record-breaking location was in Prince Albert, where the temperature dipped to a chilly -37.2 C — not including the windchill.
Saskatoon equalled its record-low of -36.1 C, which dates back to 1951.
In Regina, the temperature reached -34.7 C. The previous low was -32.2 C set in 1951.
There is some hope on the horizon, Carlsen said, as weekend temperatures are expected to return to seasonal norms.
Highs will be near zero and lows will hover around -10 C, he said.
