Maple Leaf cancels $110M pork plant in Saskatoon

Mitchell's Gourmet FoodsMaple Leaf Foods has cancelled plans to build a $110-million pork processing plant in Saskatoon and says it will close an existing meat processing plant as well. "We sincerely regret that we cannot proceed with this investment," Michael McCain, Maple Leaf president and CEO, said in a release.

Mitchell's Gourmet Foods is one of Canada's leading value-added pork processors. Headquartered in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, we employ more than 1,400 people.

"It is predicated on factors such as cost and changes in the global pork industry that have significantly impacted the profitability of our fresh meat business and require us to significantly redefine our strategy." In July 2005, the company announced plans to build the new plant and invest up to $50 million in its "value-added pork operations," which includes items such as ham, bacon, sausages and custom cuts of fresh meat. Maple Leaf Foods also owns the Mitchell's Gourmet Foods operation in Saskatoon. It says it will wind down operations at its existing primary processing plant on 11th Street within the next three years.
