Celebrate National Coming Out Day

October 11th is National Coming Out Day!

National Coming Out DayEven though there is a designated day to celebrate, coming out isn't a race or a one-time event. It should happen in stages and at your level of comfort. The first step is personally accepting your gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender feelings. The Kinsey Scale is a helpful guide to determining your level of same-gender-loving feelings. In other words, do you only feel an emotional and physical connection with men? Are you attracted to both men and women? Or, are you simply curious about the same sex?

The next stage is sharing your feelings with friends, family and co-workers. This doesn't have to happen in any particular order and there is no time limit to revealing your same-gender-loving feelings. Coming out is based on your own comfort level and should happen only when you are ready. Just know that coming out may seem like a lonely transition period, but there are several support organizations and people willing to reach out and help. Draw your strength in the numbers. Celebrate National Coming Out Day!
